Good breathing technique?

Thank-you, everyone, for contributing. I appreciate seeing various methodologies and their explanations. It helps those of us who are still fairly early on in their training form a better understanding of the importance of various martial arts techniques, especially when done in a respectful, good intentioned forum - a forum that includes the ability to have a respectful debate between forum peers. Once again, my thanks for all of your efforts to make me a better karateka.

Breath in through the nose, out through the mouth. Exhale sharply when performing a technique.

That’s how I was taught.

 

The important thing to remember is that when breathing, it’s more important to get the CO2 out of your lungs than O2 in (little breaths in, big breaths out), that’s why breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth works.

 

And you want to breathe out while exerting yourself, like when you strike.

 

I haven't read this whole thread, so this may have been said, but there are instances where you want to breath in while exerting yourself as well. If you are doing a technique where you are pulling someone into you, for example. If I'm throwing harai goshi, I don't breathe out as I pull my opponent to me - that is opposite of the direction I am exerting force.

I’m expressing my opinion. I never said that you can’t.

I still don't see why you seem so threatened by it?

I’m not and I don't see why you insist that I am.

As far as I am concerned they both make absolute sense, but that's because I look into TCM.

And I don't insist that you are threatened by it, but IMO you are... because any post on anything that comes from the slightly more oriental thinking side you weigh in with your opinions, and yet freely admit that you haven't even bothered to look into it, do any research, or any way back up your bold statements by education and experience. :lol:

 

If you look into it and still consider it * then fair enough. I can accept that. But speaking as a though one is a voice of experience when they have not tried to experience anything is IMO misleading to the people that seek advice. And I felt your original response to someone else's genuine reply was hostile in the extreme and unwarranted. If people want to give a TCM approach then IMO is as valid as any other response, as long as it is a genuine desire to help the OP.

 

Breathing is considered important by many from a MWM point of view, and considered important by others from a TCM point of view. Either way it is important, and finding a way that it clicks in your mind so that you do it properly and don't waste your training time, or worst case scenario injure yourself, is the more important part. Whether that be by MWM or TCM, or a silly rhyme that helps you remember the sequence is not important, all that is important is that it is done.

 

There will be people on the board that can help with all sides. That is the great thing in posting on such a huge community as this!

A minute of experience on the street is worth a year of training in the dojo.

he's calling it mysticism because the existence of ki/qi/prana/punap, etc. can't actually be scientifically proven. Howver, the respiratory process can. It's hard enough for many people to even come to a concensus on what qi is, let alone prove that it exists. To each his own though, everyone will believe in what they choose to.

Sorry that's not true, of course you can - or otherwise religious people could never be scientists!

 

I'm not threatened - I don't come on here and jump down someone's throat unasked because they choose to describe it in one way or the other. Each to their own - it doesn't matter to you or me how someone else chooses to think of their art!

Street grow up my friend please. I was trying to help hawkeye with the question he asked when he first made this topic and now you turned it into a personal war only because I did not say oh get more CO2 in your lungs than O2? Get real atleast I gave him examples of how to do it. By breathing in through the stomach instead of the chest isnt he doing the same thing you said only I went into more detail of how to maximize it. Get over yourself and stop ruining other peoples topics because this isn't the first one you have ruined. I will not post in this topic any longer because it is useless to argue with someone who is so close minded and can't come to admit that they made a mistake or isnt open to other opinions. Ty Angela for your support on this topic. Hawkeye hope some of my information helped you.

Actually, it is more important to get O2 into your system than CO2 out. Oxygen is what fuels your cells. Without it, you'll get more tired and eventually pass out. :)

 

And Master Jules is correct about breathing with the diaphragm rather than the chest. It's much more efficient, and you'll get much more oxygen for the same breathing effort. Babies breath using their diaphragm, but somewhere in life, we learn the bad habit of breathing with our chests.

 

Doctors tell those with emphysema to breath using their diaphragm so they get the most out of their breathing.
