I thought about asking this in general in general Karate and martial arts but I think it might fit better here.

What are the traits of the best martial arts students?

If you are a teacher what do you like to see in your students?

What traits do you like to see in you classmates?

I like to see my coaches correct students in a pleasant yet efficient manner.

I also like politemess in my coaches and students.

Moobrack, I think you remember a time where you clouted me round the head with a perfect mawashi. He responded in a polite way.

Good point, SaiFight. It is very good when a student asks question because every once in a while you will learn something from them and they will get better quicker. :karate:

Interesting question Sai

I like it when students ask the odd question, possibly refering to stance or history/terminology.

However, some students just ask questions to waste time, or just to annoy the instructor.

Questions - a mixed blessing LOL

All the previous traits suggested are all very good qualities for a martial arts student to possess ... actually for every human being to possess for that matter!

But I have found ...be it an older student or a child, the number 1 trait to possess is perseverence. It is just too easy for people nowadays to throw in the towel. Everyone is looking for immmediate results in everything they do. I've seen it with parents of child students. If Johnny isn't Bruce Lee by end of month or more disciplined by taking his martial arts class then they take him out without letting him "persevere".

Statistics show that fewer than five percent of students who join as a white belt actually make it to black belt. Why? Because they do not have the perseverance to give themselves a chance to achieve black belt. There are many demands on your time and the study of martial arts will compete with these demands.

A word to the older student:

That they don't think they suck. If someone thinks that they are not a good fighter, they CAN'T remember their form - they can never be good until they have basic confidence and esteem. Fighting is not only in the physical aspect - it's also much in your head.
