senna_trem
With the summer Olympics just gone I am sorry I did not get a chance to see any of the martial arts competitions. What divisions are there? What styles usually dominate? Are there harder competitions (more eliminations) for men because there are more men competing? What nationalities usally compete? How physical does it get? Also, what sports channels televises karate competitions regularly? "I think therefore I am" Rene Descartes
Shorinryu Sensei
This thread would probably be better placed in the Korean martial arts section, as Taekwondo, a Korean martial art, was the only martial arts (besides judo of course) to be represented in the Olympics. What divisions are there? Divisions are by weight in the Olympics, not by age or belt.[What styles usually dominate? Taekwondo...but then again, it is the ONLY system competing, so they have a slight advantage....but only slight. Are there harder competitions (more eliminations) for men because there are more men competing? That I don't know...ask the TKD people. What nationalities usually compete? Just about all countries I suppose, except some of the very small ones. How physical does it get? I didn't catch any of the matches at this past Olympics, but I have seen a number of the previous Olympic matches. Opinions will vary of course, but I don't feel that the contact these people are doing, and the rules that they fight by, is anything to be proud of. The aren't allowed to punch to the head, grab, sweep, choke, etc...and you will seldom see any sort of a decent punch in these matches. Basically, it's two people trying to kick each other in the head. IMHO, I think it's comical and does not represent the martial arts to the public as a whole in a good light...but again, that's my opinion. Also, what sports channels televises karate competitions regularly? I don't have cable, so I can't answer this question for you. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!" Straight Blast
Also, what sports channels televises karate competitions regularly?Normally ESPN and ESPN2. Rarely shows MA though...you'll be lucky if you catch K-1 fights or Karate Form Competitions.
Kumite988
You'll be unlucky if you catch XMA which i've seen on there a few times
senna_trem
Thanks for your answers, I posted it under Korean Martial Arts and also got some very good replies. Sadly I do not think I get ESPN. "I think therefore I am" Rene Descartes
Omega14
Thanks for your answers, I posted it under Korean Martial Arts and also got some very good replies. Sadly I do not think I get ESPN. XMA is sometimes aired on TSN. I think the west coast gets TSN right?
aefibird
What styles usually dominate? As well as Tae Kwon Do (as has already been mentioned) Judo is an Olympic sport. I've heard rumours of the introduction of Karate as a sport for the next Games, along with WuShu, but I've not read anything definate about it. "Was it really worth it? STR33T GUY
As well as Tae Kwon Do (as has already been mentioned) Judo is an Olympic sport. Add to that, free-style wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling and boxing. A minute of experience on the street is worth a year of training in the dojo.If you can’t sprawl and brawl, you can’t street fight.
Squawman
The Olympic commitee is thinking about getting rid of TKD because the TKD president and officals are so corrupt.
senna_trem
I'll check my TV listings to see if I get TSN... I do! Score! "I think therefore I am" Rene Descartes
