WannabeChamp
Well, I got about 6 months expirience under my belt before i got my braces and for some unknown reason i stopped going to my martial arts class. Anyway I am 14 and am very serious about re-joining the school. I was only a white belt, but my teacher believes that it takes quite a few years to be a true black belt. I was the highest white belt, farthe up then people who had been there months before me. When i was doing exersises requiring me to do a horse stance i went as low as the black belt who was teaching me to go went. He said to me and the other new white belt in a private section, " I like you guys, even though i don't ask you go lower with every excersize even though your tired." I just had a few quick questions so that i can get back on track and off to a good start. As you can tell trying hard wasn't my problem. I was probly on my way to being a yellow belt and doing decent in the tournement that was about to take place. Well maybe, its one of my questions. Well I'll get to the point. 1) Staying in shap is a hard thing for me. Any suggestions on diet and excersis ruotines? 2)When I practice a kick and punch ruotine i have good speed and am accurate. But when I spar with some one it's liek I loose any skill i have I am slow to react. I think it's becuase I am afraid to hurt them or perhaps its becuase i'm shy? Any Suggestions on this? 3)Any other suggestions to help me do better? To give you an Idea of my wieght to perhaps give em a better idea of a training routine I'm about 5'5" give or take 130lbs. Thanks so much. I am so excited to start. I may take up Judo for a few years after I get a brown/purple belt in my current martial arts.(tand soo do)
ninjanurse
First of all...go to class and get started! Your prior experience has merit and will show in your techniques and efforts. Belt ranking is not the important thing...personal effort and attitude are. Don't get hung up on the color belt you wear. Second, you are just a beginner and are not expected to fight or react like a BB. Sparring has to be learned just like a form or set of basic techniques and it take TIME-lots of it!! You will get better every class so don't sweat it. GOOD LUCK! pineapple
DIET The worst thing to do try when attempting to lose weight is to starve yourself. When your body lacks food, your metabolism slows down so when you begin to eat normally, your weight gains will be more than before. Diet means watch what you eat! A diet that I have been ridiculed for but worked well for me was simply avoiding beef and pork and sodas. SPARRING Your thoughts of not wanting to hurt anyone in sparring is good because sparring is sparring, it is not fighting. The more that you train, the more control that you will have so you'll be able to spar more freely without hurting anyone. When I spar with people, I adjust myself to how they are sparring, if they hit lightly then I hit lightly, If they hit hard then I hit hard. 1kickKO
I agree with everybody, they have made some great posts. It takes lots of time, and that is your only friend when your techniques/timing/power/everything else will come. As long as you attend class and try your hardest, everything else will come naturally..trust me. As for your diet, I know you get told this a lot, but fruits and veggies is the BEST way to go. They provide your body with the best nutrients and vitamins possible. Like cramps in your legs, bananas are great for that because they contain potassium. Junk foods should be avoided as much as possible, but if ya just can't stop eating them, eat them in certain limited amounts. For excercises, pushups work your back and shoulder muscles. You can do a veriety of types of pushups, pushups on your fists, pushups on your fingers, etc...situps work your abdomens, basically as much as you can think of, the basic excercises are the best. Be sure to run a lot and do aerobic excerices too..because karate is very aerobic. good luck in training.

I agree, work on a few techniques to get them down pat, and execute them. It's always better to have 3 or 4 that you know will work than 50-60 that you're not sure about.
