vertigo
On my test at the end of this semester, I passed with a semi kyu (or half kyu)... so for the next test, will I be testing for my full rank? or the next one? e.g. I am a semi 8th... will I be testing for 8th or 7th "Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go." - T. Grenadier
Difficult to say... Assuming you went from 9th Kyu to 8.5 Kyu (sorry for the lack of a better term), I would guess that your next jump up would be to 8th Kyu, unless your school allows for the skipping of various ranks along the way for exceptional cases. KarateHamster
Half-kyu? Sounds lame.. back in my Shorin-ryu days we were tested for all three White belt kyus on a single exam. However, we did train for almost a year before this exam took place, if I remember correctly. Cheers KH
Grenadier
Half-kyu? Sounds lame.. I have mixed feelings about half-kyu grades, since it all depends on the circumstances. If you have a class comprised of adults and older children, I would wager, that you're going to be better off avoiding the half-kyu methods. However, for classes that are mostly younger children, it might serve you better in the long run, to throw them the proverbial bones along the way. Shorinryu Sensei
I'm just curious, but do you pay for these "half-kyu" tests? I'm wondering if it's just another way for your instructor to make a few bucks. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. strangepair03
How many belts are involved if you have half kyu's......maybe panneled white/yellow...yellow/green etc!!!! Wear a few panneled belts to tournaments and they will probibly think your a master!!!!! A punch should stay like a treasure in the sleeve. It should not be used indiscrimately.Kyan Chotoku Sensei
vertigo
How many belts are involved if you have half kyu's...... just one... so even though i'm half 8th, i still wear orange belt (as a full 8th would) What were you before? 9th kyuIf you have a class comprised of adults and older children, I would wager, that you're going to be better off avoiding the half-kyu methods. I agree with you.. I'd almost rather just see pass/fail... "Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go." - T. S. Master Jules
The rank system is as follows : 10th Kyu 9th Kyu 8th Kyu 7th Ho (Ho is the term for "half step") 7th Kyu 6th Kyu 5th Ho 5th Kyu 4th kyu 4th Ho 3rd Kyu 2nd Kyu 1st kyu ShoDan Ho (Half step between 3stripe brown and 1st degree Black) ShoDan--1st degree Black NiDan--2nd degree Black SanDan--3rd degree Black YonDan--4th degree Black GoDan--5th degree Black RokyuDan--6th degree Black ShichiDan--7th degree Black HachiDan--8th degree Black KuDan--9th degree Black JuDan--10th degree Black There are other titles associated with ranking as well. They are : 1st and 2nd Dan--Instructor 3rd Dan--Sensei 4th and 5th Dan--Low level Master 6th, 7th, and 8th Dan--High level Master 9th and 10th Dan--Grandmaster Other Titles also include: Renshi--usually given at 4th, 5th, or 6th Dan. Renshi means "One who has mastered himself" Kyoshi--usually given at 7th and 8th Dan. Kyoshi roughly translates to "Wizard", and "a higher level of self mastery" Hanshi--usually 9th or 10th Dan who is the highest ranking practicioner of the system, and therefore, "head" of the system. Soke--a Soke is a creator, or founder of a system. For example.... Morehei Ueshiba was the Soke (or creator) of Aikido Chojun Miyagi was the Soke (or creator) of Okinawan Goju Ryu Kyu means "child", and Dan means "man" As far as the use of color belts.....some dojos have just a few....ie: white, orange, green, brown, black some instructors chose to have many more for whatever reasons.... One thing that will always hold though, is the Kyu/Dan system. ~Master Jules......aka "The Sandman""I may be a trained killer......but Im really a nice guy"
