KarateHamster Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 Dr.Flem, don't tell me you still haven't started training? KH
simpso1j Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 I used to study Shotokan. I trained for about 3 years and at times, I trained 4-5 times per week. I found it to be a good style for having strong stances and punches. I found it hard to move, however. Nothing wrong with the style.
Dr. Flem Posted January 4, 2005 Author Posted January 4, 2005 Dr.Flem, don't tell me you still haven't started training? KH The holidays are still going! I'm losing my mind!! hehe

You know what?? I sometimes find that! Moving from stance to stance smoothly is sometimes really tricky! I'm still trying to improve it! Kool Kiais: ICE! DIE! KITES! I sometimes find that! Moving from stance to stance smoothly is sometimes really tricky! I'm still trying to improve it! Dear friend ,If you find it hard to move between stances ,don't blame the style ! shotokan done proprly will allow you to move swiftly between stances .Basic training is to develop and condition the body for the next stage (free fighting ) ,when you look at two advanced karateka's fighting free style ,they move with such speed and fluidity that doesen't look much diferrent from other fighting arts.my suggestion is to find your range and train moving into diferrent stances ,there is a myth that people have this idea that the lower the stance th better and stronger it is ! but one must find its own range to have the fluidity of movement and a strong stance ! never give up !

ShotokanKid Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 I've been doing Shotokan for 5 years, and I have a Jr. Black Belt, my dojo's second jr bb (JR BB-under 16) I do 3 hours of class a week as well as an extra hour of "apprentice teaching." I find it a very useful experience. For example, there's a kid at school who's always looking for a fight. Karate has taught me that if I want to, I can wipe the floor with this guy. But it also teaches me that I don't have to fight him. One day, this guy grabbed me. I used a quick strike upwards that didn't hit him. I used it to break loose. Then he tried to push me. I used the perry block. I didn't hit him but what I did do kind of showed him that I can defend myself and I'm not a person to pick a fight with. pers Posted January 28, 2005 Posted January 28, 2005 Dr.flem ! I found out the correct name for the karate sensie in Australia, he is Frank Novak ,I am sure you can find out his whereabouts! Good luck never give up !
supernix Posted January 28, 2005 Posted January 28, 2005 I just started taking Shotokan it is nice so far. I started in Shuri Ryu and currently hold a green belt in that style. I have not studied in over 10 years but I keep getting flash backs of what we did back then. I don't know the Shotokan katas yet but I similarity in movements. Which is not surpising as I have read that Shotokan came from Shuri-Te From my studying sad to say I have noticed that there was no grappling in Shotokan that I can see so far. My Sensei however has training in Hapkido so we do get to practice grappling as well so I get a well rounded work out. I try to go everyday but so far I have only made it 4-5 times a week. I just recently passed the test for Yellow And this time I don't think I will ever stop training again. Steve,http://www.shotokansite.com/
