Piastre Posted January 17, 2002 Posted January 17, 2002 I just asked that because the other day I was flicking through a shotokan book in my local library, and the pictoral representation of the kata "heian nidan" was what we'd call "pinan shodan", obviously with the aesthetic differences of shotokan compared to shukokai/shi-to ryu.
SaiFightsMS Posted January 17, 2002 Author Posted January 17, 2002 The difference you are noticing is probably the stances. We use kokutsu dachi in the opening moves. In shi-to we used neko ashi dachi. _________________ Get a better life, get karate. Piastre Posted January 17, 2002 Posted January 17, 2002 Sai... Certainly there are different stances used etc. Just a question for you as someone who has trained in both shotokan and shi-to ryu. Did you find the transition difficult? I have only a fairly rudimentary knowledge of shotokan, but the differences are quite obvious. For example, the neko ashi dachi I've seen shotokan practitioners use bears little resemblance to our cat stance etc.
SaiFightsMS Posted January 18, 2002 Author Posted January 18, 2002 Well the way I do cat stance hasn't changed. I have done it the same way in Shi-to ryu, Shotokan, and Shorin ryu. I really didn't find the transition and relearning the katas that difficult really. We had not done kokutsu dachi in Shi-to ryu. But, somehow it felt natural to me right away. A few of the guys didn't like it at first though. Actually at that point I was the only one who had allready learned all 5 Heians. They didn't have to relearn all of them. Maybe it is the depth of the cat stance that looks different to you?
Joecooke007 Posted January 18, 2002 Posted January 18, 2002 At my school all of the katas that we learn are based on rank. Even adults must first learn basic katas to improve blocking and basic punching. When we actually learn real Goju Ryu kata you must try to do them even if they are hard. If you do not try you are no longer making yourself a better person. Boards don't hit back. -Bruce Lee
Karateka Posted January 19, 2002 Posted January 19, 2002 At my school, we all learn what we have to for our belts, and we also learn advanced katas. Its pretty cool. "Never hit a man while he's down; kick him, its easier"Sensei Ron Bagley (My Sensei)
