STR33T GUY Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 I’m looking for a weapon that I can use for defense on the street. This is my criteria; - It must be non lethal or at least difficult to kill someone with by accident. - It must be very reliable, so no batteries or compress gas needed to operate it. Spring loaded might be ok but it can’t be a one shot deal. - I want the weapon to be concealable. - I want it to work in conjunction with striking and grappling techniques. A minute of experience on the street is worth a year of training in the dojo.If you can’t sprawl and brawl, you can’t street fight.

steveb Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Try an expandable baton. They collapse down to pocket size, spring open at a touch, and are non-lethal. Check your w/ your local police for concealed carry laws. Res firma, mitescere nescit
scottnshelly Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 I would go with the Rope Dart or the nine section whip chain. *non lethal (if used unproperly *no batteries or compressed air *concealable *works well in striking and grappling.
MenteReligieuse Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 I would go with the Rope Dart or the nine section whip chain. *non lethal (if used unproperly *no batteries or compressed air *concealable *works well in striking and grappling. And on top of that, its illegal! --------------------------------------- Hmm, I'd say a pocket stick (disguised as a keyring perhaps). You'll get in trouble if you walk around with weapons anyway.
STR33T GUY Posted December 22, 2004 Author Posted December 22, 2004 I did a google search to look at the weapons mentioned so far and here are my first impressions. The expandable baton looks like a real winner. It’s essentially a club, so it will be easy to use. I can’t think of anything bad to say about it. I like the chain whip too. It appears to be a more versatile weapon than the expandable baton. The down side is that I’m sure it will take more skill to use it effectively. I’m somewhat skeptical about the rope dart. It seems to me that the rope dart requires even more skill than the chain whip, but the chain whip does everything better, with the exception of throwing it. Of course I’ve not used either weapon before so I could be completely wrong on this. Maybe someone who is experienced with these weapons could expand on this. As for the Law, since darn near everything is illegal here (Canada), it’s either break the law or go unarmed. At times I’d rather break the law. The Saint Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 I'd say study the Cane, a walking stick is a great weapon if you know how to use it right. Rent a movie called The Advendures, the guy has awesome cane work. An Umbrella can also be used as a cane. It has a pointed end and a hooked end, good for sweeps and poking someone. It show similarities to Fencing and is an interesting art that would make Yoda proud. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to go to his class." Choi, Hong Hi ITF Founder
Sauzin Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 A cane really is one of the most effective weapons you can carry. While it isn't concealable per say, if you have it with you, you are well armed. Same goes with a walking stick, only it's a bit more obvious. I've never used an expandable baton. I Imagine it would work well, especially if you knew how to use a short stick. Kobutan's are awesome, probably the most practical. But hey if you're going with illegal, brass knuckles are nice and if used properly, non-lethal. IF USED PROPERLY. If I were to choose I would choose based on convenience. If I'm not going to mind carrying something, then I would go with the cane or walking stick. There is no question that this is the most effective weapons. If I didn't want to carry something then I would go with the Kobutan since I have not tried and personally don't trust an expandable baton. Not to mention it would be more defendable in court. The only two things that stand between an effective art and one that isn't are a tradition to draw knowledge from and the mind to practice it.
STR33T GUY Posted December 23, 2004 Author Posted December 23, 2004 I have always liked the idea of a cane. But for me at my stage of life I don’t think it will be practical. I’m a hyper guy always walking fast or running, the cane would just be in my way. Now in 20 or 30 years it will probably be perfect. delta1 Posted December 24, 2004 Posted December 24, 2004 Keyslinger, from Mr. Chuck Sullivan, IKCA. Not only legal to carry, but legal to conceal. Inexpensive. Easy to learn to use. So quick that witnesses have watched the altercation and had no idea how the defender droped the agressor. Can be used face to face, or as you run and the guy chases you- without turning or even breaking stride! Oh, they are also real handy for organizing and carrying keys. Freedom isn't free!
