Roadkill Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 I teach a simple philosophy when dealing with edged weapons. First of all there will be no one technique that will work, since the environment is dynamic and you must adapt to it. Most of the techniques I've seen over time are beautiful and I still enjoy practicing some of them. But would generaly be ineffective. First, you will bleed. Get that in your head and be prepared. 1. RUN 2. Cant run for some reason. EQUALIZE pick something up (extra reach is good) 3. NUTRALIZE rapid entry with the intent to drop them where they stand. There is much more to discuss on each of these items, but that is the just of it.
street fighter Posted January 6, 2005 Posted January 6, 2005 Wow you can do a book to answer this one, situation i guess would be a major factor, skill another, in a hostage situation where the blade is static then deflect and wrap for control and damage may work but in an active striker deflection and counter may be best, disarms are sometimes tricky but if have control of the bad guys weapon arm it can be done, running like hell is the best or shoot them, and Roadkill is right as well if put in this unfortunate situation look for an improvised weapon, stick, bottle , purse, keys, ect. I love knives and training with them and the indonesion history that has help shape my way of blade training but if you can run then do that first. Survivor
street fighter Posted January 6, 2005 Posted January 6, 2005 Oh yea, prepare to bleed, it has been said many time but what is not said is that steel can reach bone pretty easily in the arms and legs and ribs, you may do more than just bleed you may go into shock, inside the arms and you may also lose the use of your hand and or arm depending on depth and location of the slash or stab, be careful and dont depend on the movies for your fighting style, and be sure if your teacher teachs the blade that he knows what he is doing, knowing some cool techniques is not blade fighting, understanding ranges and foot work and what can and cannot be done in a given time and distance are core basics. Sparring with enert blades is a must and to be honest with yourself and training partners, if the wood or plastic makes contact then in a real steel situation you are more than likely bleeding if not worse. STR33T GUY Posted January 6, 2005 Posted January 6, 2005 I’ve never been in a knife fight but the three that I have seen or seen the aftermath of, all resulted in someone being taken away in an ambulance. So based on my limited experience, the loser has a 100% chance of needing prompt medical care or faces death. And the winners all when to jail or were already there. A minute of experience on the street is worth a year of training in the dojo.If you can’t sprawl and brawl, you can’t street fight.
Shorinryu Sensei Posted January 6, 2005 Posted January 6, 2005 There was no option for this, but I'd vote all/any of the above depending on the situation, how the attacker comes at you, your skill level and experience with the various techniques, etc. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"
Ted T. Posted January 6, 2005 Posted January 6, 2005 I won't vote until the poll includes the option to hit him with a chair while your buddy stabs him in the back. Ted TruscottThe Raising Canes Club
Hudson Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 Kick his hand? Does that work? It looked real cool in Enter the Dragon... The game of chess is much like a swordfight; you must think before you move.
delta1 Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 Kick his hand? Does that work? It looked real cool in Enter the Dragon... Might, if your opponent is extremely stupid and slow. He only has to rotate his wrist in order for your foot to contact the blade. Your foot has to travel how far? Freedom isn't free!
Shorinryu Sensei Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 Aren't people that try that in real fights nicknamed "Stumpy"? My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"
VinnieDaChin Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 personally id try to get in close and get control of that knife hand, but thats only if i cant take the option of giving him my money or running the hell away. no matter what though, youll probably get hurt. try this- get someone, even a kid, with a marker, and try to get it from them, and see how many marks you get on you while doing it.
