Wing Chun Kung Fu or Goju Ryu Karate

Recommended Posts

I would say that if the goju pplace you are looking at has a lot of high kicks in it it isn't really goju and as for centerline striking and trapping wing chun doesn't have anything on okinawan goju but only if it is taught properly

Just for the curious....

The school I'll be attending(hopefully) will be run by Sifu Del Fisher.

From the website.

Sifu Del studied Wing Chun under the personal guidance of Grandmaster William Cheung for seven years. In 1991 he opened the Australia Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy. In 1995 Sifu Del held the Australian Light Heavy weight title competing against all styles.

As mentioned earlier.....Goju doesnt have many high kicks....but it does have a tremendous amount of centerline striking, as well as a huge amount of grappling.....it is a tremendously "complete" system.....Id be more than happy to discuss it at great length with you.....feel free to contact me anytime Dr. Flem.......that really goes for anyone.....get me going about Goju Ryu and Im as chatty as a woman.....lol

Good luck with your new training Dr. Flem!

I currently train in both WC and karate (it's Shotokan based, but there's elements of Goju in it). Once you 'get going' with your training in one martial art, you might wanna think about taking both of your choices. I love my training in WC and I also love my training in karate.

However, although they are very similar in a lot of respects, theres plenty of differences too, so I wouldn't suggest that you start out with 2 new martial arts at the same time.

Anyway, have fun and train hard whichever MA you decide to train in! :)

Having taken Wing Chun as my first martial art, I can highly recommend it. My experience* has been great, with excellent facilities, teachers and students.

The art itself has been more combat focus and less extravagent then I expected; however I am now really enjoying the art, flow and theories of the style.

My teachers have a direct line to Grandmaster William Cheung although they have moved on and now see Rick Spain as their SiFu.

*My experience is limited to one school, one style of wing chun and Machado BJJ, and two teachers (husband and wife) hence I do not claim to be an expert.
