I'm just wondering what are your reasons for doing martial arts? I just do them for fun. I'm a 15 year old Christian boy and I don't fight. I just think the martial arts are fun. The ability to defend myself if needed is just an added bonus. Also, how old were you when you started?

People do martial arts for several reasons, the most popular ones would probably fun, fitness and self defense.

I personally went into the martial arts because I like fighting, in a healthy sort of way. I don't go out and pick fights with people I don't know, I just enjoy contact sparring, working the bag, watching UFC and Pride fights, stuff like that. I lift weights for my physical fitness component.

I started doing martial arts last summer, when I was 15.

Primary reason for me is the self-defense aspect and then of course bonus features for me are that they are good exercise and fun.

To become better at martial arts.

I started for self defense, but it has become a way of life for me. If I had to quit (God forbid) right now, I donno what I would do .... it wouldn't be pretty.

It's not just a hobby, but yet, it's not about the fighting or getting beat on (eventhough the conditioning isn't bad either).

It's hard to explain in words, I guess. I know I couldn't do without it. That is basically the bottom line.

I'll "ditto" what Laurie said.

It's more to me than a hobby, but it isn't just about fighting either. Martial Arts are so addictive.

On a side note, do you think that maybe that is one of the reasons why people cross-train? As well as wanting to train in aspects of MA that their style is 'lacking' (eg training in a grappling art as well as a striking one), then maybe folk choose to train in more than one style because MA is so addictive? It's certainly one of the reasons why I train in more than one MA. :)
