GojuRyu Shawn Posted December 11, 2004 Posted December 11, 2004 My instructor said (when I became yellow belt) that I can start weapons! I went to the hardware store last night to buy some dowel for the rattan sticks, and I ordered a bo from my sensei. I get to start on monday! I'm psyched! Current: Yellow Belt in GojuRyu. White Belt in Kabudo.
karatekaBR86 Posted December 11, 2004 Posted December 11, 2004 Congratulations! The bo is such an essential weapon to practice. Not only is it extremely practical in our time and age, but it will improve your strength and reflexes tremendously. Just remember your stances from karate, and transfer them to bo practice....That's the beauty of karate, it can be applied to anything!
Drunken Monkey Posted December 11, 2004 Posted December 11, 2004 "dowel for the rattan sticks" what? dowel is not rattan...... post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
GojuRyu Shawn Posted December 12, 2004 Author Posted December 12, 2004 Well, escrima sticks. Lucy sticks. Sticks that are 2 feet long and 1 inch in diameter. Current: Yellow Belt in GojuRyu. White Belt in Kabudo.
ZR440 Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 They probably won't last very long if you do stick drills with them. Purchase the real rattan. Flame harden and then let some mineral oil flow thru the veins to preserve them. PM me if you need more details. It's happy hour somewhere in the world.
Sauzin Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 Well the same is true of the bo. If your doing lots of person on person drills then you want ratan. But Okinawan ni-tan bo does a lot with kata. And hardwood dowels will work for this. It all depends on your instructors curiculum. The only two things that stand between an effective art and one that isn't are a tradition to draw knowledge from and the mind to practice it.
