BlackDragon Posted December 10, 2004 Posted December 10, 2004 I'm looking to start a martial art but there are so many different kinds I don't know what to pick... I'd like one that uses both punches and kicks, and prefer striking over grappling. I'm also intersted in weapons training and would like to learn a martial art that would be useful in a real fight. I am 6" and weigh 155 pounds and am pretty fit. Any suggestions would be appreciated
DokterVet Posted December 10, 2004 Posted December 10, 2004 For effective fighting using striking, I reccomend boxing, muay thai, san shou or a full-contact karate style such as kyokushin. You need something that stresses hard contact, realistic distance (no pulling punches half a foot away from your opponent), and conditioning. None of those, however, have weapons, so you might want to take a weapon style in addition to one of those. 22 years oldShootwrestlingFormerly Wado-Kai Karate
Shorinryu Sensei Posted December 10, 2004 Posted December 10, 2004 Okinawan Shorin Ryu if available. If not, just about any other Okinawan system is good. Personally, I'd recommend avoiding ANY Korean art if you want to learn effective self-defense and weapons...but that's just my opinion. I am about the same size and find hands and feet effective in my style. An elbow, knee, and hand skills are very important. Do your homework on various arts in your area. You can learn a lot about an art by watching the top fighters in the club spar. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to go to his class." Choi, Hong Hi ITF Founder
Mr. Mike Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 take your time and visit every studio in town...see what you like...ask for demonstrations. Every good school should be willing to help you with what you want to know. You can ask 50 different people here and get as many different answers, because we are all VERY dedicted to our own particular style, so bottom line: you have to pound the pavement and see what you like. SloMo Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 I can't add any more to what Mr. Mike said. He talks sense! You need to get out there and try some out. TKD WTF/ITF 2nd Dan"A Black Belt Is A White Belt That Never Quit"
