DaChroniclez
the pants on my heavyweight gi are too long. I like the width of them, but i'd say i could shorten them by about 6 inches at the bottom. how would i do this? Should i do it myself or take it to a professional place? I have a sowing machine, but im not sure how i would take care of this. would i just fold it inwards and sow it up? how do you guys take care of this stuff? If you're not sure how to do it yourself (I wouldn't do it myself), I'd suggest taking them to any seamstress. She will no doubt cut probably 4 inches off the bottom (you may have to wear them so she gets the measurement right) and make sure she understands that there needs to be multiple rows of thread on the bottom, not just one, as they are going to be taking a lot of stress from kicking and grabbing during workouts. DaChroniclez
k, approximatly how high off the ground do you think the pants should be? Or does it relaly matter? I have a 100% cotton gi and have washed/dried it 3 times ( my sensei said it will only shrink that much and after it wont shrink anymore) but im afraid it MAY possibly shrink a little bit, will it? I was thinkin of having it about an inch or two off the ground? what do you think?
Shorinryu Sensei
It shouldn't shrink more than once. You don't want it dragging on the ground...maybe 2" above the groudn or so. Make sure you wear it and kick a few times to see if the waist slips at all. My first gi was about 6" off teh ground, but the rest are around ankle height now. Personal preference. There is no set rule on the length. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!" Dijita
I'm not sure if you guys use the same gi's as us. Is your gi an elasticizd or tie up drawstring at the waist? I know that my gi shrunk a ton! I was swimming in my gi when I first got it and now it fits great. I did have to hem the pants though. I guess it depends on preference, some people like their gi's slightly longer some people like it off the ground. Personally I like my gi pants as close to the ground as possible. Like someone said earlier, it'd probably be worthwhile to pin it at various lengths go through an exercise routine and see what you like best. Mark it off at your preffered spot then bring it in for somone to hem it.
DaChroniclez
was there a reason why you were swimming in your gi or just cuz you felt like it? Is it good to do alot of things with your gi like that. Since im kind of new, im still at the point where im afraid to wear my gi often, and take really good care of it, keep it perfectly white without any spots whatsoever. i'm afraid to put it on when im training outside of class and stuff like that. I thinkin of starting to use it more often since it is a very comfortable training uniform. Swimmin in it eh? what other things do you do with your gi/when do you wear it? How do you take care of it and how often do you wash it? In warm water? and i have a really good dryer which has an option for "Rack dry" where i just place it on a rack inside the dryer, im thinkin of using this (my sensei said not to use dryer but instead to use hang drying cuz itll ruin the gi faster) cuz i think it'll be just like hang drying. what do you think? AngelaG
I wear some of my lightweight gi trousers in bed. Wouldn't swim in them though, far too heavy for starters. I take good care of my heavyweight ones though, they are too expensive to keep on replacing. Hehe, umm... I'm not sure how serious your question was in regards to swimming in my gi. To clarify, "swimming in my gi" was an expression used to imply that my gi was REALLY REALLY big for me. I do not literally go to the pool and swim in the water with it. However at summer camp, which I urge you to go too next year because it's a lot of fun, we do water training in which case you will literally be swimming in your gi. If you are worried about ruining your gi you can always get a second one. A lot of people do get a second gi for "outdoor training" because at summer camp your gi pants will get stained and dirty. I wash my gi almost after every class, I never go more than two classes without washing it. I wash my gi alone with no other clothing in warm water. I do this so that it stays "Whiter" longer. Washing your gi with other clothing will risk having your gi tan out to a darker colour. I do throw my gi in the dryer though. Another good tip to keep in mind. If you ever get any blood on your gi, make sure that as soon as you can, soak the blood stain with COLD water and scrub it out. If you use warm water, the blood stain will set and then it'll never come out. Also avoid using any bleeches as this will weaken the material. When I train outside of class, I almost always wear my gi pants because of how easy it is to move in them. I don't wear my gi jacket though when training outside of class. ERPMISTER
My gi when I first got it was about 6 in to long as well. All I did was take pins and pin it up to where I wanted the length to be and hemmed them. Of course if your not young like me and still growing, then maybe a more permeant solution would be in order. For that, I would go to a tailor.
