DD Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 I know that wu shu has many acrobatic moves but I'm sure there is also a combative aspect. But what I'm wondering is it like karate and TKD where you have freestyle sparring? It would be pretty cool to see those techniques used against someone in sparring. I would like to learn wu shu but there are no schools in my area.
dippedappe Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 To get to the actual bottom, then they teach you the same as any other gung fu school, basically. Most Wu Shu fighters tent to fight very Fancy looking, but he/she will be able to fight in the same way as you. Some of the Acrobatic moves are very effective. Take Tornado kick. If you hit your opponent with it....Well then his down for sure. Most acrobatic moves have more power than the normal movements, its just harder to time them right. About the sparring, I cant say for sure. It depends on the school I guess. Wu Shu is meant to be more based on fanciness than combat. No point in denying that. But you still learn the same movements. How to learn to use them properly in combat is up to you. I mean, You can always fight with your imaginable friend. Or ask if one from your school wish to sparr or something.

Zhong Gau Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 (edited) sorry. Edited December 12, 2004 by Zhong Gau Ah! Mantis Grasshopper, i think you would do very nicely on a bowl of rice!
dippedappe Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 I would like to know what exactly you think is wrong about what I said? If you want to correct someone you should atleast say what, that person was wrong about.
Hudson Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 MenteReligeuse, while everyone would like to be able to converse with as few extra words as possible, "no" is not a suitable response to what he said - if you disagree, state your reasons. Otherwise you're just being bothersome. As for Wu Shu - most people view Wu Shu as some form of martial art "dancing", with no real application. Of course, these are the same people who could take any martial art and then look like kickboxers in the ring because it's "effective". The game of chess is much like a swordfight; you must think before you move.
Ted T. Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 Due to the animosity between houses and styles in China, many demonstrations and tournaments became brawls, embarrasing their Gov't sponsors, especially in front of foreigners. The PRC gov't decided to fix this by standardizing the routines as a gymnastic endeavor that could be performed by all styles. The standardization also allowed for a standard evaluation / scoring system like in Olympic competition, tending to take ego over stylistic differences out of the picture. Thus they "banned" the use of the names Shaolin and Wudang in their sponsored tournaments, and called everything Wushu. Since the stylistic details that were diferent were the fighting differences, it was these differences that were put aside in favor of a more gymnastic approach. But back at home, your Wushu was based on the fighting style of your teacher, and, back at home, these influences are honored and practiced. Ted TruscottThe Raising Canes Club
Zhong Gau Posted December 9, 2004 Posted December 9, 2004 hey guys, menthe may have left it open intentionally to encourage a heated discussion. menthe may have been responding to the statement in the middle of the post (2nd to last line), based on grammar and his experience as a stylist as posted elsewhere. his experience may be such that your experience is unique in the broader spectrum of wushuiness. he could've been feeling ornary and wanted to challenge you kids mentally to see how easy it'd be to pick a fight when all you can do is squirell style. Ah! Mantis Grasshopper, i think you would do very nicely on a bowl of rice!

Okay, first of all...Im no kid. I dont care if he wants to pic a fight, or not. If hes going to correct me, then atleast tell me what I was wrong about. Do you think Im wrong with, acrobatic movements having power? The most powerful and damaging movements I can do, is Flying sidekick and Tornado kick. Flying sidekick isnt difficult to time effective, but Tornado kick is. But if you manage, he will most likely go down. If you dont think Im right about this then tell me why.
