Lenny
I'm still looking for the right MA for me and I have some interest in Hapkido. It seems to be a pretty well rounded MA for self defense. I was researching some schools in the Dallas area and I was wondering if anyone had any referrals or opinions about schools in the area. Also, how much do you pay per month? One school here charges 115 a month and that sounds a little high. Is it, compared to others? How long did it take to get your black belt? Is it easy to get hurt in Hapkido? I've heard a lot about painful joint locks and pressure points. I don't mind getting banged around, I just don't want joint reconstruction. Thanks for you help. tufrthanu
Well 115 sounds a little high to me too but it may just be the area your in. Hapkido is extremely well round and has almost every category of MA in it. It takes about 3-4 years to get a black belt in hapkido if you train on a regular basis and have never had MA training before. Less time if you have more if you dont come often. If you get a good instructor you will probably not have a problem with getting hurt. Thats what tapping out is for. If you get a bad one your odds are very high...and thats why you need to view a class before you take it. Long Live the Fighters!
DLopez
Don't use the price of classes to judge whether you should join a particular dojang. Would you think going to the local Community college is just as good as going to an Ivy League university because the community college costs less, and after all, they are teaching the same subjects, right? Of course you wouldn't. It's equally silly to make similar judgments about a martial arts school. But YOU will have to check out the "pricey" dojang to find out if it's really worth the cost or not, or even whether you can afford it. I do see your point, but I drive an Isuzu and not a Mercedes for the same reason I'm shopping around for good prices on different schools. It would be great not to have to consider price, but I do. DLopez
That's understandable. You have to choose what's reasonable to you. The higher priced school may be justified in that the instruction may be exceptional there, but that could also just be perception and not reality. If you can afford it, it's worth a look to see if it's "reality". If you can't afford it, well, it's a moot point. DeanDahn Boh Nim - Black-Brown BeltKuk Sool Won"Dream as if you'll live forever.
