Changing Schools

Recommended Posts

A new dojo has just opened in my town, just two blocks away from my dorm. I haven't checked it out yet at all, and know nothing about it. Here is my question: would it be out of the question or disrespectful to change schools if this one is better than my current school? I feel like I am getting a lot out of my current instructor, but if this new guy seems to be better suited for me, I may want to switch. The new dojo is much closer, but that's about the only advantage I know of so far, I will keep you posted when I find out more about it. Some say it is best to stay with the same teacher for a lifetime. This is just a preliminary question before I find out more info. Thanks.

Check the school out. But if the distance is the only advantage, I wouldn't switch. You have something good now, don't give it up unless the distance is an extreme inconvenience (like having to drive an hour to get to your current Dojo).

Good luck whichever way you go.

I agree with Mu Ryuk.

There's no harm in you checking out the new school.

However, if the new school is only better because it's closer then I personally don't think that's enough of a reason to switch. You have to take into other factors, such as price, contracts and (most important IMO) the quality of the instruction.

A similar situation has occurred to me, actually. A new Wing Chun school has opened up that is only half the distance for me to travel than I do to my current school. However, I've not gone to look at the school, even though their prices are cheaper, because I'm very satisfied with my current WC club.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do! :)

Its going to all depend on the school. So I wouldnt even think about changing yet, not until you see what the new school has to offer.
