GojuRyu Shawn
So, I'm a yellow belt in Goju Ryu, and white belt in Kabudo. I own a bo, and some rattan sticks. But I hope that my parents will buy me some new weapons for christmas. I don't know any 'advanced' katas, sadly, and I fear that my classmates will laugh at me... I'm doing it in a duo, me and my friend Cole will be doing bo katas, and he will probably do a tonfa kata. He also knows every kata up to sanseyryu (spelling?), and will be doing most of his katas. I know up to geksai ni (maybe up to sanchin or possibly saifa if my friend is kind enough to teach me.) Point: What katas should I do, and if I get some new weapons for christmas, make up some katas or do non weapon katas with weapons? I have 2 short swords at home, so maybe I can throw together a kata by the talent show. The talent show is only a few months away, and I wanna be prepared! Current: Yellow Belt in GojuRyu. White Belt in Kabudo.

aefibird
I agree with Batt. Stick to what you know - it's better to do what you know really well than struggle through something you only half-know and do it below par. Good luck with the show! "Was it really worth it? steveb
Since you're doing a "duo" with your friend won't you both be doing the same kata together? If not, since you say you have a few months to practice why don't you try doing one of your open hand katas with your escrima sticks. Play around a bit and find which one works well with the sticks and then practice it over and over. I'm sure you can find one that will look great. Good luck! Son Goku the monkeyking
I think you should stick to what you know with the Bo staff. Mostly because you are going to do it at school and even if you are giving a demo most schools do not like people to bring swords there, BELIEVE ME my friend almost got expelled for bring in a broad sword for a kata so you might just whant to stick with the staff. battousai16
i dunno, my state of WI has a zero tolerance policy; a young elementary school child was expelled for bringing a butter knife to school to cut the cake he brought for his class (though i believe he was re-admitted when the family threatened to sue), but i was able to bring a sword to my school when i had class immediately afterwards. if you clear it with the office, they're generally ok with it. at least, our administration is. if they say no, accuse them of being racist for not recognizing cultural traditions, or something like that. they'll come around... martialbrown
My best friend and I did something similar, for our school variety show, we included kata that we had made up for the show using a short staff, empty hand and a variety of self defense thrown in. It was fun, we timed it to music and had work at the timing of everything, since it wasn't stuff we were used to. It was made to look like a mock fight between the two of us, with kata thrown in. I think it took about 2 months to get to performance ready. Good Luck with your show, and at least, have lots of fun.
