Weapons Demo is finally here

Kicks

Recommended Posts

Well guys, this is the big weekend for our weapons demo.

As you may recall, several months ago when I first joined this group I started asking about sai and bo. I needed to know what were the best to get for purposes of demo and maybe competitions. Many of you offered great advice and suggested quality equipment. Some even disagreed with my intent to be a little 'flashy' in our demo. But whatever the case, the time is at hand.

The dojang my kids and I attend is having a belt test this weekend. Three 4th dans are going up for 5th degree. We wanted to do a special performance for these 5th dan canidates, and thus the weapons demo.

Tonight (Friday) is the color belts, and tomorrow is the black belt tests. Tonight all attending black belts will be required to perform a demo. My kids and I are going to do Tae Guek Oh (6th) Jang in unison (at the same time). Shannon will be doing it traditional style while Ross will use a Bo and I will use the Sai. Then I'll do a creative Sai routine and Ross will do a creative (flashy) Bo routine. If all works well we'll perform it again tomorrow at the 5th dan test in front of several local Masters who are attending to help judge the test.

This will be our first time ever doing something like this. Wish us luck!

Cool man. Can you get a video of it, then encode it and post it up somewhere on the net???

Anyway, I wish the best of luck to all of you.

Friends may come and go, but enemies accumulate....

prior to this demo I explained that this was just an exercise routine. While some techniques were practical, it was for the most part just an exercise in movement and dexterity.

Don't expect Hollywood!

We were nervous as all get-out. There was a panel of 4th, 5th, and 6th degrees there to judge a belt test for several 5th dan candidates. They all complemented us on our routines, especially after learning we did this on our own without instructions (our Dojang doesn’t do this type of training).

Well, we’re looking forward to learning more and developing and expanding our routines.

Well first I'd like to say that it's obvious that you and your team put a lot of time into the kata. The movements look very practiced and deliberate and I really think you will do well. Actually, and I mean this seriously, the H-form katas are some of the best H-form I've seen.

Now since you didn't ask for a critique I'll not go any further. I think you know that I have some opinions about certain things (such as spinning a bo in one hand, striking under the arm, or twirling a sai) that might cause me to make a few suggestions. There are perhaps a few other things... :D

Regardless, thank-you for sharing the videos with us. :)

The only two things that stand between an effective art and one that isn't are a tradition to draw knowledge from and the mind to practice it.

Sausin,

Thanks for the commebts about the form video. We do the the Chang-Hon, the TaeGuek, and the Palgwe family of forms, with an occasional Karate or Chinese kata.

As far as the sai routine, prior to this demo I explained to the audience that this was just an exercise routine. While some techniques were practical, it was for the most part just an exercise in movement and dexterity. I'm still learning practical applications, but in the meantime I'm trying to develope balance and control of the weapon. I do a warm up and dexterity drill like the one in the demo to help with this.

Ross has only been working like this with the bo for about 6 weeks. The routine you see him do in the video was started to be put together about 3 weeks prior to the demo. He want sto do a self defense domo with the bo at the next belt test. We wants me to attack with and knife and he beats me up. Go figure!

Just like to add that the videos are good and I applaude all who participated. As for you Sai demo, looks good, at least you dont drop them and stab yourself in the foot like someone I know (lol).

Yours in Budo
