Papillon950 Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 Jump anything really. It's kind of embarassing, but whenever I attempt a jump kick I get this sudden fear that I'm going to fall and my legs drop instantly. I'm relatively new at this, so I'm sure that's part of the problem, but my friend who's taking the class with me got it the second day, so it's not really helping to boost confidence in my own abilities. Can anyone offer any advice?
CloudDragon Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 Do plenty of deep squats and jump-ups, it's when you jump from a standing position and touch your knees to your chest. It will make it much easier to get the good height and balance that you need to do the kicks. A Black Belt is just a white belt that don't know when to quit!
SloMo Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 Is irt any jump kick or is it jump spin kicks? Don't feel bad though, a lot of people have a little trouble with it at the start. You can also practice by doing the jump part without the kick. Then throw in the kick when you start feeling more confident. Good luck and hang in there! Ottman Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 Start with just the jump, when you're comfortable with jumping and landing, then try the jump with the chamber for the kick. Next remember to practice the kick on the ground until you're comfortable with that. Then put it all together and start jump kicking! And as always, practice practice practice or it won't get better. tommarker Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 First off, don't sweat the fact that your friend picked it up faster than you. Some people are just more athletic than others, but that only gets you so far in the martial arts. It sounds like a confidence thing. Think about Ee Dan Ahp Cha Ki (jump scissor front kick) Can you skip? If so, you're halfway there! What some students do while learning this is to throw the first front kick on the ground, and jump and throw the other kick while chambering the previous kick. Don't worry about falling... It's going to happen. I'm a 2nd Dan, and I still will completely miff a jump kick and fall on my butt. You just have to laugh and accept it as part of training. I'm no longer posting here. Adios.
Goju 4 Life Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 get over your fear an djump. You might fall so what. You might get hit by a truck crossing the street. If i had to choose between karate and everything else, I would choose karate so i could beat up whoever made me make the decision and have everything else
Kaminari Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 Here's what you can do to fight that fear. Have a friend watch you jump, and show you how high you're going. It will be less than you think. Because your perception is on a higher level, the jump seems higher than it is. The distance from your feet to the floor is less than you believe because you're measuring from your eyes and head.
