I agree and I disagree. Cross grain, no matter how skilled the cut, a katana is not going through a red oak bo. It would make about a 1/3" - 1/2" cut then stop. Now if it were at a 45 degree angle then maybe. But a katana can't even go trough a straw mat or bamboo shaft at a 90 degree angle. Let alone 1 1/4" of hardwood.

Right, I was thinking more of the 45 degree angle...just like in the samurai movies or something. In either case, I was just trying to emphasize the specific cutting mechanism of the katana, which is never hacking, but sliding. In other words, not a direct hit against the bo...(I know you know this, I was just throwing that out there for others).

Yes, the katana is a slashing/thrusting weapon, not a hacking weapon.

Personally, i see this discussion as a tad silly. The reason being, the outcome is being posed by the assumption that the wielders (whomever is losing) don't know how to use said weapons properly.

I'd rather have the sword - if you're talking Katana or Dao. If we're talking one of those crazy ones - nodachi, zodachi, odachi, or whatever they're called, I'd rather have a knife then one of those.

The game of chess is much like a swordfight; you must think before you move.
