Don't go picking a fight unless you are 200% you will win.

in contrast to what others said, i would use jump kicks even though it might be less traditional.

the one i usually train is a roundhouse kick to the head, the power starting to build from the ground and the jump being very fast and not too high.

in one of the rare "fights" ive been into (might not be considered a fight since it was a brief exchange of blows), my kick actually ended the fight. i hurt the guy, i touched his head even though he blocked it. after my kick he kind of stepped back, i could tell he was intimidated. that was a good thing, it ended the "fight" and i dont like getting in fights.

IMO there doesn't seem to be a practical application of a jump side kick in a street fight unless you are chasing after someone or entering the fight from a distance and the other guy isn't looking. It is a kick done to unbalance a horse rider (or other unsuspecting victim) or to attack someone on the other side of an obstacle (provided you can jump over it). The key to the kick is the hangtime after takeoff (the more time in the air the better) and timing (extension must coincide with the midpoint of your "flight-path". Of course accuracy is also important as with any kick but that comes with coordination of the other elements..and lots of practice.

I may have misread anothers post, but I believe someone said in another thread that the high jumping kicks were more often than not used in conjunction witha large polearm (kind of like pole-vaulting) to dismount an opponent. Unfortunately, I don't remember where I saw this.

The greatest clarity is profound silence.

A good way of training your legs for jumping is to hop up and extend your legs straight in front of you while reaching for them with your fingertips. Sort of a modified jack knife position. The tricky part is that you do this really fast without stopping for a set period of time. Start with 30 second drills and work up to 1 minute.

I don't agree with a blanket statement that jump kicks are impractical. I agree that most of the jump kicks are not the sort of thing I would use in a street fight. I'd probably take out someones knees if I had the chance. But I've seen jumping kicks used very effectively in sparring and on those ultimate fighting matches. Just my opinion

The question posed here was about jump side kick not jump kicks in general. I agree that certain jumpng techniques can be practical and useful in a fight or sparring match. I use them all the time and usually they are quite effective-from a sparring standpoint. In a real fight I would have to say I might be a bit more selective about when to use them.

i dont think they are impractical i done correctly when you have an opportunity i have never actually used one but i would if i could

i was once in this park and this guy id gotten into a couple of scraps with was a black belt in karate and i heard running behind me and when i looked back he was jump kicking at my head but i caught him in the air and choked him out i dont kno that the more fancy moves are good for useing to start a fight probly just fininshing off a weakend opponent if you want to show off

this guy once tried to do a round house in mid air but my friend punched him while he was halfway through and the fight was over

It depends. In some instances, they could be practical, if the opponent was stunned, not looking, far away, etc. (as has already been mentioned by others). Other times, though, it could just leave you off balanced and open to an attack. Not entirely practical, but not always useful.
