Lenny
Writer. Write about what you know. Anyway, the point here is... if you don't know something, research it. That's what I meant.
Writer
Ninjitsu sounds pretty ominous, which I like. This chick does alot more than martial arts. She's a jedi of sorts (only a couple of hundred years in America's future). But she's very fast and athletic (perfect balance on ice, perfect spatial memory, etc). When she does go hand to hand, I wanted the reader to think they know just a little something about her training, that's all. It should sound authentic. She's one of two or three main characters, and probably the most interesting. So I don't need to read a treatise on martial arts. Maybe I'm wrong and a fool, but I don't think I'm gonna have to post it on the web. Some of the ideas and effects are very original and someone will bite on this. In any case, someone in the government will be scanning her resume, he's impressed, and say something like: "Ninjitsu, sixth degree black, regional titles." But I'm still open on exactly what the guy says. So if any of you have a suggestion (funny or otherwise) here's your chance.
Shorin Ryuu
"Underground prizefighting champion" is pretty vague enough but still gives a reputation of being tough. Is this a formal resume or some file the government has on her? You can totally make my day and write: "Traditional Okinawan Karate." Then have some underling pipe up to his superior and say "Contrary to popular belief, Okinawan karate is a brutal yet often graceful, direct style that emphasizes both striking and grappling to create a close in-fighting style to be reckoned with. Most people don't realize this and underestimate her abilities until it is far too late." But, I doubt it, since Traditional Okinawan Karate just doesn't sound as sexy as "Crescent Dragon Kung Fu" or something she learned while in the "Hand of the Jaded Skull Syndicate." If you're wondering about the edits...some of the names I suggested before didn't flow well (not that they were any less ridiculous). delta1
Agree with White Warlock. You don't have to train in the martial arts for years, but you should get a basic familiarity with them before writing about them if you want to be taken seriously (even though it's fiction, it should be somewhat believable). If you want style recognition, I'd go with a mixed venue. American Kenpo for street defense and understanding of principles, Taijiquan-fa for internal application, Sambo for grappling, Muay Thai for hardcorps physical contact. And she's so bad, she isn't interested in rank. She trains primarily in the clothes she'll normally wear anyhow, so no one really knows what her 'rank' is. By the way, those deep, mystical powers she posses comes from her study of Taiji. So you should do a lot of reading on this in particular. Also, visit a few different schools. But find seriouse martial arts schools, particularly with the Taiji. If they aren't doing the martial applications, then they are a health only club and not worth your effort. And if you don't want to research all the other martial arts mentioned, then just go with the Taiji, with Shui Jao and Chin-na (Chinese fast grappling and joint locks). All you really need in one convenient package, and novel enough for most people because they only think of 'Tai Chi' as a bunch of old folks and old hippies gracefully dancing in the park. Good luck. Oh, and keep in mind that a martial art is a good thing to study for a writer. When you reach an impasse, get up and practice a few techniques or do a form. Clears the mind, centers your thought, and uses energy that would otherwise distract you just sitting there. Definately go with American Kenpo for this, as no other system out there concentrates so much on principles and understanding right from the start- important for a writer. Freedom isn't free! MenteReligieuse
By the way, those deep, mystical powers she posses comes from her study of Taiji. No, no, no! Her powers comes from telepathic/telekinetic advancements due to breeding manipulations!
SevenStar
Jet Li trained at the Shaolin Temple, that is all I know. No he didn't. I know for a fact that some of his training came from an tian rong. However, most of his training was with the bejing wushu team. He's likely had many teachers, but he's never trained at the temple.Ninjitsu does not seem bad. Only ninjitsu styles I know are taijitsu and ninpo (I think they are styles..) those aren't styles. They are subsets of ninjutsu. taijutsu translates to "body arts" and makes up the hand to hand training of the ninja. ninpo in another name for ninjutsu. Pretty much all styles of ninjutsu are dead today except for the bujinkan and one other whose name escapes me at the moment. Or take for example Nina, the sexy stealth assasin trained in Assasination Techniques based on Bone Martial Arts and Aikido. Here the Bone MA is totally made up then a general statement is made about Aikido. there is a bone breaking art called koppo jutsu. That's likely the art they are referring to. It's not made up. P.A.L
I like Frederick Forsyth style(the day of the jackal) he goes into so detail that really educated his readers. The government guy reads the resume ,he is impressed but not too impressed , there is some thing about her , so he calls his connections and news comes from FBI informants. She was the only female who fought a thai boxing champion in a illegal under ground Match in L.A. , it was bloody but short . thai boxer was dead in less than a minute in the hands of some of the biggest south asia gamblers , she disappeared but cost them more than $10 million in lost debt….. and of course she is a master of Okinawan tuite and white crane Kong Fu. she grew up in Hawaii and traind by a Oki. American Master , her good balance comes from long hours of surffing(not internet).
