elliotspirrett Posted November 25, 2004 Posted November 25, 2004 Hi, I have just this year joined my local karate club. Although the club is very tough and challenging, I was looking forward to hopefully taking part in tournaments. After bringing this up with some of the senior belts and the sensei, it has come to my attntion that we are never invited to tounaments anymore. This is because we have won every trophy 5 years running. After this the refereeing started becoming more biased and unfair. Thus we never attend tounaments. If there is anyone who knows about any in my area (East Midlands, UK) then I would love to know and would be happy to pass on any information! Thanks. SevenStar Posted November 25, 2004 Posted November 25, 2004 That sounds weird.... When I was in CMA, we placed first in tourneys all the time, but were always invited back. Regardless, enter them anyway - does your gi have some distinguishing patch that tells them which school you attend? If not, then enter. When you are asked what school you train for, just tell them you're taking private lessons from someone, or something.
elliotspirrett Posted November 25, 2004 Author Posted November 25, 2004 Ah good call. Though these tounaments are infreaquent this will be better than not attending any at all. Thanks very much! ncole_91 Posted November 26, 2004 Posted November 26, 2004 Good luck with them and I hope you dont get harrast.
Shorinryu Sensei Posted November 26, 2004 Posted November 26, 2004 That doesnt'; sound right to me either. I've been a judge/ref at tournaments for around 25 years and never heard of not inviting a school back because they win all of the time. We have not invited scvhools with bad attitudes, rude behavior, indifference towards the rules, etc...but never because they won! My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"
SevenStar Posted November 26, 2004 Posted November 26, 2004 exactly. tournaments are thrown by various schools and organizations. If NONE of them want you guys around, it seems like must be a reason...
aefibird Posted November 26, 2004 Posted November 26, 2004 I'm quite near to Ashby De La Zouch. If I hear of any tournaments in the area then I'll let you know! I'm off to a tourney in Sunderland this weekend, but that's probably a bit short notice for you.... Here's a couple of AMA comps that are coming up next year. They're large events, but if I hear of any smaller ones in the Midlands area then I'll PM you or post an announcement on here. AMA Darwen Open AMA North East Open Both the links are PDF format, so you'll need Acrobat Reader to be able to see them. About not being invited to competitions...I've never heard that a club wouldn't get asked back to a comp just because they 'won everything'. Maybe you should check with your Sensei again before entering any comps - he may have another reason for your club not entering tournaments. "Was it really worth it? Kreisi Posted November 27, 2004 Posted November 27, 2004 i think your karate school should have the rights to compete ,,, who decided you cant compete???? What hurts you but doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.
elliotspirrett Posted November 28, 2004 Author Posted November 28, 2004 aefibired, you're a great help, cheers mate. Where abouts in UK are you? I notice you do wing chun. I saw a wing chun demo in Manchester, and I thought it looked a little complex but very interesting and good (for want of a better word)! aefibird Posted November 28, 2004 Posted November 28, 2004 aefibird, you're a great help, cheers mate. No probs! Where abouts in UK are you? A tiny little one-horse village called Wath-upon-Dearne. It's in South Yorkshire, between Rotherham and Sheffield.I notice you do wing chun. I saw a wing chun demo in Manchester, and I thought it looked a little complex but very interesting and good (for want of a better word)! Yes, Wing Chun is very interesting. I've not been training in it very long (about 6 months), but I love it. "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." The Beautiful South - The Rose of My CologneSheffield Steelers!
