I found out what style of martial art it is and it's the style of shotokan karate I am a purple sash in Tan Tuey kungfu which is the second level and I have to fight a person who is at the second belt level of shotokan. will someon please tell me how to fight a shotokan second belt level so I know what to expect . From the newbie on this web site Son Goku the monkeyking, holla .
Shito Ryu Posted November 24, 2004 Posted November 24, 2004 The best thing you could do would be to keep a clear mind. And since I have never sparred with someone from a different style, I would suggest maybe going to a Shotokan school and checking out what kinda stuff they do while sparring. I am in Shito-Ryu and that is fairly close in style, I personaly like to do alot of leg sweeps followed up with punches to face\solar plexus. Those are good clean quick moves that will most likely fool a MA of that level. But that is me and no matter what stlyle of MA your in, your prolly gonna fight different from someone else of that exact same style. Before the fight really work on front snap kicks, with the front leg. Those also are very fast techniques. Also in Kung fu do you do many back kicks? Cause those can work REALLY well if the opponent isn't ready for that move. Work on those alot before the fight, and if he scores the first point, then on the next round turn as if your scared and want to run away and if he starts to charge then pop him a nice quick back kick in the gut. These moves aren't something you would prolly beable to easily pull off on an experianced fighter\sparrer. But on a low level karate\(whatever style their in) student, those moves might do the job perfectly. So just work on alot of front snap kicks, back kicks, round house kicks, reverse punches, backfists, sidekicks. And by "work on those techniques" I mean to make sure you can do them as fast as possible. Cause a kick is very good technique if done fast. Also I am not in Shotokan but my Sensei and another student in my class trained in it. And I know that they use alot of deep stances, and reverse punches. I don't know what kind of contact is gonna be at your tourny but elbows are VERY fast and affective in a close up situation. So just keep a clear head and have fun Friends may come and go, but enemies accumulate....
Kreisi Posted November 26, 2004 Posted November 26, 2004 I have trained shotokan karate and its style is very simple and when i trained my sensei always said that if you hit then you hit hard and dont be afraid of hittin so you should be agressive cause it might calm your opponent down. What hurts you but doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.
SevenStar Posted November 27, 2004 Posted November 27, 2004 okay, let's try a different approach here... you don't wanna look at it as style vs style - It won't help you much. you are both traditional style strikers. you have a sun fist punch, they have a reverse punch. you have a bow and arrow stance, they have a forward stance. There will probably be alot of similarities technique wise, but the principles you use may be different, for example, your footwork may be more circular than his. First, tell me some things about you - how tall are you, how long is your reach, which techniques do you prefer, etc. instead of worrying about what he will do, worry about getting your own techniqes and strategy down, then make him fight YOUR fight.
White Warlock Posted November 27, 2004 Posted November 27, 2004 100% in agreement with SevenStar. Overemphasis on what your opponent may do, puts you in 'their' game and essentially sets your mind to be on the defense... or reactive, as opposed to offense... or proactive. Shorinryu Sensei Posted November 28, 2004 Posted November 28, 2004 One thing I've noticed in tournaments over the last 25 years, is that regardless of which system they are from...TKD, KF, karate, Free style..whatever...they all almost EXACTLY fight the same way! Sure, the TKD people tend to kick more, and there are subtle differences between stances and such...but in general, I'd say that they all pretty much...when the punches and kicks get to flying...fight the same way regardless of what system they are from. MHO anyway. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"
shotokanwarrior Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 One thing about shotokan is the mastery of the basics, They are usually hard techniques. we trained to take hits, my instructor once said " do not worry about what your opponent is going to throw at you because what you do to him will we a lot worse" but this was also one shchool, who knows how others teach. Where Art ends, nature begins.
Gilbert Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Most fighters don't do what they are learning. They just start kicking and punching and they forget there katas and forms they learn. Use all you've learn so far and use it properly. you'll see the difference. Even the most powerful human being has a limited sphere of strength. Draw him outside of that sphere and into your own, and his strength will dissipate.
ShotokanKid Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 Most fighters don't do what they are learning. They just start kicking and punching and they forget there katas and forms they learn. Use all you've learn so far and use it properly. you'll see the difference. Very true. Usually, nobody plans out there techniques but go when they think they can score. Like people say, don't think of style vs style but person vs person. "What we do in life, echoes in eternity.""We must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men."
1kickKO Posted February 4, 2005 Posted February 4, 2005 Just remember: Shotokan uses deep stances, whenever I fought shotokan fighters, they were easy to sweep because of hteir deep fighting stance (also completely noticeable in shotokan katas...weapons and open hand).
