JerryLove Posted November 24, 2004 Posted November 24, 2004 i actualy started this because i wanted a mideval(viking) sword, but im open to any thing. It would depend pretty heavily on "what kind". The short answer is "yes for some, no for others". https://www.clearsilat.com
Treebranch Posted November 25, 2004 Posted November 25, 2004 Certain Sabers have metal sheaths that can definitely used for bashing and deflecting. "It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.""Lock em out or Knock em out"
White Warlock Posted November 25, 2004 Posted November 25, 2004 I would say it's a good waste of a nice sheath. Seriously though, a sheath is there to protect your sword from the elements, dirt, oils and bend. Few are made sturdy to withstand impact. Treating them in such a fashion endangers the life of your sword. But, there's another problem. You're dealing with two entirely different approaches. Swords are generally slashing and thrusting. Few that can be comfortably wielded one-handed are designed for hacking. However, a sheath has no edge, so hacking would be the only feasible way to apply it, one-handed. The problem here should be obvious. You'll have to be either extremely gifted and be able to apply slash/thrust techniques with one hand and hack techniques with the other hand, or end up using your sword or sheath ineffectively. At best, you could use your sheath as a shield (defense), while entrusting attacks to your sword-hand. Treebranch Posted November 25, 2004 Posted November 25, 2004 Well Saber fighting was done with one hand. Logically you could use the other hand to deflect and bash if necessary. If there two sword techniques out there, it's not too far fetched that the scabbard could be used as a weapon as well. There are many ways to use a weapon and anything can be a weapon. So the sheath can be a weapon in it's own right. Many Saber sheaths were made of metal for a reason. MenteReligieuse Posted November 25, 2004 Posted November 25, 2004 I'm pretty sure the ninja-to (ninja swords) were often used with the scabbard in fights.
username4 Posted November 25, 2004 Posted November 25, 2004 the sword i used did not have enough handle for my wide hands so i decided to use them dual handed this is easy to do with the right set mine werent curved they were strait. and to do it with a medeval sword would make your movemnts slow and the sword unweildly. this would also happen if i had had a curved bladed long handled kantana. my swords were 26 inches long so not very long and when running up the back of my arms only came to half way up my tricep.
searcher Posted November 27, 2004 Posted November 27, 2004 I think you want to do a search for Zatoichi style swords. I believe they are based off of the famous Japanese movie character named Zatoichi. It uses a sword that looks like a jo, but is actually a sword.
