street fighter
Hey lucky it semms I am following you around, I agree with the training thing wether it be the streets or from a good teacher. Good skills and a determined attitude and the willingness to actually fight and not just freeze and curl up, will generally produce a successful fighter. I have seen to many strong men,( and women) freeze and cover, some can be brought out other just dont seem to have it in them. Good skills, lots of practice, without the heart equals, victim. My opinion you all. Survivor
brickman
Lucky, I guess I made a wrong assumption. I was assuming we were talking of people of "equal" ability or talent. Guess I should have said "all things being equal....." I have been hit by many people who thought they could punch and have only ever been hurt by three guys....1. My sensei. 2. A guy from Arkansas, Sensei Ward (dont know his Japanese name). 3. A sensei from California....his name eludes me right now. In all those cases I was sparring someone much better than I will ever hope to be....and they all kicked my butt! So...even after my sensei broke my nose (he told me it was my fault) I got up and said....well teach me what I did wrong.....my sensei just smiled and told me I was crazy and to go home. His wife later told me that he did not think I was a very good kicker (they suck) and that my punches were good, but the one thing that set me apart from all his other students was that he had seen me take many wicked shots and still come back for more. He (and I believe it is the same with all oriental teachers) admires my heart....my willingness to keep coming back. There is nothing greater to someone than that.....a strong "heart". I have seen guys who had better punches and kicks than me....but once you blew through one of those and hit them....it was all over. AS the post above states....they become victims because they lack heart.....for all you "Rocky" fans....the Eye of the Tiger.
street fighter
Hey brickman, just a thought from me to you, step outside of the box even if just for alittle while and maybe do some mma, im not saying go fight in the ufc just go and experiance some of the other thoughts on fighting and training, sparring means different things to different people and schools, it sounds as if you do not mind the pain and training, so you might find that a full contact mixed school would be a treat, that is assuming that there is a good school in your area and if not maybe just buy some of the different combative dvds out on the market, sure some will suck but others will be great, hey try and always keep an open mind about things you may not have experianced. If you truly wish to be able to be effective in the street against the variaty of opponents that you could possibably meet then always expand your knowledge base. Hudson
I suppose I'd say it's heart - But my definition would be the curiousity and willingness to learn, never give up, and to put out 120%. So, it's the guy who above all, has dedicated himself to a hopeless ideal (perfection) and strives with all he can to reach that goal (unnattainable or not) I mean, this is all long-term. The game of chess is much like a swordfight; you must think before you move.
street fighter
Shapeless, thats great 11 yrs, wish I had the time and teacher around here to get deeper into JKD I have only about 3 yrs of concepts and that is not JKD every day just when it is appropraite for the lessons. A great fighter to me again is the one who was born with the no quit attitude and the ability to survive and keep coming back. He may not win in every case but in every case he never quits. Muaythaiboxer
i dont believe that great fighters are born i believe they are made by hours of training and dedication if you where to take two people one and average joe and another with a huge amount of talent if the average joe works harder he will be better than the guy with the huge amount of talent.
