Many people claim to have proficiency in the martial arts, and there are many good martial artists out there, what sets apart the good from the great? When do the moves become an art? Who do you think epitomizes/d those qualities best.

here is his post. he's asking who we think epitomizes the qualities he mentioned, and also states that many people claim to have proficiency in the martial arts - and the title of the thread is WHAT MAKES A GREAT FIGHTER?

I think you misunderstood, not me...

a great fighter is someone who can adapt to any situation. he trains hard to gain skill and conditioning and is willing to bend the rules of your art to sometimes gain the upperhand. a great fighter is prepared for any situation and never puts down his gaurd. they must also learn fight on the mental level. he is always mentally prepared and will never use his art to hurt those weaker than he is. he is niether arrogant or humble. a great fighter will always remain unpredictable and always fights to the best of his ability. a great fighter will always strive to become stronger.

A great fighter is the one who will continue to rise no matter how man times he may be knocked down. Its not the dog in the fight its the fight in the dog.

i have to disagree with the comments that a great fighter is born....

completely...

its all about practice and state of mind.

you have to embrace pain to be a great fighter.

if you cant handle pain you will never be a great fighter.

you have to embrace practice to be a great fighter.

experience, intelligence, intuitiveness, environmental awareness, there are a whole long list of things.

to make it short. here you go.

you have to be willing to get hurt, and take chances to be a great fighter.

you have to have the training and practice and experience to make the decisions necessary to be a great fighter.

you have to have the awareness to change your strategy based on all factors involved.

all of this can be learned.

none of it is born in us.

True, you can't be born with training, practice, or experience. However, some people are naturally good at fighting, who are naturally more driven, some who are more tolerant to pain, etc, just as some are naturally built for dancing, or are good at certain tasks.

Posted

all of that is learned.

you learn how to move better and be better coordinated hence being naturally good at fighting.

you are given examples of how to strive towards something, hence being naturally mroe driven.

you learn to shut out pain, or deal with pain in different ways hence being more tolerant to pain.

etc.

etc.

unless someone has birth defects that prevent the way the recieve outside stimulus everything you stated is a learned action, not born.

I while ago I can across a site that answers this question quiet well:

http://www.selfdefense.org/selfdefense.asp?id=4

After reading that I realised that I am not a fighter in the true sense of the word and understood my 'trained martial artists' sometimes get the #^$#&^ beaten out of them on the street.

I think the key difference is being mental perpared for very tough situations.

one thing makes a great fighter. It is not technique or finess.....it is heart. By that I mean it is the guy who refuses to quit. How many of you will hit a guy as hard as you can ten times and have him keep coming back? What about 20? What about 30? Eventually he will wear you down. IT is because of his unrelenting pressure on you to take him out of the fight. You might say it is his hatred of losing that makes him great. I have seen guys like that....people who will have bones broken in a fight and keep going simply because they hate to lose....It is my opinion that most point fighters are not that way....they lack a certain toughness...for lack of a better word.

sorry brickman i disagree.

Heart never makes up for experience or training... EVER

And I would love to see you bring 1 person who has more heart then what 30 of my punches can do.

OR 30 of any fighter that knows how to throw effective strikes
