I have trained with this Sifu before for a couple months, I have heard good things about him and he seems like he knows wat he is doing. But when i compare his accuracy and current ability to one of my previous sifu's in shaolin hungar (Sifu Stephen Chang) it seems like Sifu Fred Kwok (the wing chun sifu) isnt on the same level. I could be very wrong about this, but I'd like some comments because i noticed that there are some very knowledgable people on this forum so i figure its a good place to ask.

Drunken Monkey, maybe you know something about Sifu Fred Kwok. We are located in Vancouver, B.C.

Thanks for any help, I'm just worried because I know there are alot of fake schools, or crappy ones who teach wrong and maybe dont even know the concepts themselves.

one more thing i have to add is that the Sifu is a Wing Chun master, but he somewhat combines it with Kick Boxing, because he feels that Wing Chun lacks the kicks so we train Kickboxing kicks. Its basically Mon, Wed Wing Chun and tues, Thurs Kickboxing. I'd like some comments on that aswell, thanks.

i have to say that i don't know that much about wing chun outside of the uk and to a certain extent, hk.

from what i have found from a basic google, kwok sifu is a known student of jiu wan sifu who i know to be one of the true 'masters' of the last generation.

it is often said that jiu wan is actually a peer rather than a student of yip man, which is what's usually shown in lineage family trees.

not sure what to say about the addition of kickboxing.

i personally have also done some kick-boxing (san shou rules), rather, tried to do some kick-boxing.....

if i was to say anything about this then i'd just say it was because it allows him to have a teaching/sparring format that allows some actual hands on thumping, albeit with gloves.

it could also be just that he's aware that its what would appeal to a lot of students.

pure conjecture on my part of course.

i should say that hung gar and wing chun are two vey different animals and you can't always compare the two by appearance alone.

if you look at my last proper sifu, you'd hardly think he could hurt a fly.

he is also a dan grade in jiujitsu and organises ground fighting/grappling classes for us.

doesn't mean anything except he likes us to 'see' more things.

anyway.

jiu wan was a top class teacher.

fred kwok was his student.

going by lineage alone, it's good.

i can't give you anything other than that.

post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are.

I would not try to compare the Instructors because not one martial artist is the same and thats whats so great about the arts. He is showing you his version and if mixing it up a bit with kickboxing is his way then great, now if your not enjoying class and you feel your not learning anything new or realistic then you might want to move on, but if you like the class and feel your learning then thats wonderful and stick with it.

A True Martial Arts Instructor is more of a guide than anything, on your way to developing the warrior within yourself!!!!!
