Angus Posted January 8, 2002 Posted January 8, 2002 This new dude i train with said to me last night that if i want i can do some Uchi Deshi thing where i train three times a day. I think it's kinda like an unpaid apprentice. Apparently it is supposed to be some kinda honour for a style's founder to offer someone a position like this. I might think about it but it might interfere with the other stuff i do. Crazy, Angus Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.
Punchdrunk Posted January 8, 2002 Posted January 8, 2002 Angus if you are going to be a"young lion" I think you probably need to give up the notion of having "other stuff". Based on your posts I don't doubt your dedication or ability one bit. However, it seems like a pretty traditional role for a free spirit like you. It is an honor and it says a lot about you that it was offered. Which appeals to you more, the intensity of accepting or the freedom of remaining a "ronin"? Osu! One cannot choose to be passive without the option to be aggressive.
KickChick Posted January 9, 2002 Posted January 9, 2002 I'd jump at the chance (especially at your age!) ... but hey that would put a damper on that "other stuff" ... Priorities?
Angus Posted January 9, 2002 Author Posted January 9, 2002 Okayz, i won't lie to you... Plain and simple (sorry Patrick but this needs to be clarified), i enjoy my sex life. I always find just enough energy to go the distance and i'm probably more well known for my ability in that region than for my martial arts. So yes, living at the dojo may interfere with that which i love greatly. BUT - this is a great opportunity so better myself, become complete, and simply become the best fighter i can possibly be. I'd no longer be a scrapper, i'd be a butt-kicking animal. I am, however, a free spirit as punchdrunk said and i don't know if i could mentally get up at 6, train till nine - start at middday and train until 2:30 and then start again at 7 and traing till 9:30. Physically it would be, well, not a breeze but nowhere near as hard as my mental state. I'd be thinking - "Oh, i could KILL for a foster's or a toohey's... Or a 6'2" blonde with %$%^# and a nice #$^^&%$$" Why oh why can't there be some happy medium!? Angus Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.
Angus Posted January 9, 2002 Author Posted January 9, 2002 Heh, i just thought of the happy medium... Doing karate at the playboy mansion... Mmmmm. Angus    Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.
Punchdrunk Posted January 9, 2002 Posted January 9, 2002 Actually, Angus, Jerry Quarry trained for his fight with Joe Frazier at the Playboy Mansion. He put on a whale of a scrap before his cut prone skin and his (late night diminished?) stamina betrayed him. Which Saint was it who said "Give me abstinence! But later." ? Or Jesse Jacson " You must endure short term pain for long term pleasure. Don't fall for short term pleasure that condemns you to long term pain." OK enough preaching. This is the very definition of a crossroads decision, pilgrim. Osu! One cannot choose to be passive without the option to be aggressive.
KickChick Posted January 9, 2002 Posted January 9, 2002 Now here is our perfect example of a "warm blooded male" ... and there is nothing wrong with cracking a tinnie now and again but seems to me there is alot of training involved (both physically & mentally) ... seems you already have it in your mind that its too much discipline for you ...but hey you won't know fer sure if you don't try and if you don't you might say 'What if?' eh, Av-a-go-yer-mug .. Good Luck with your decision Angus!
SaiFightsMS Posted January 9, 2002 Posted January 9, 2002 I thought about that too Angus. And I see another potential problem. It is could you really subject yourself totally to this guys teaching without constantly trying to tell him what you know is a better way to do things?
Angus Posted January 9, 2002 Author Posted January 9, 2002 Well, the thing is i actually agree with the style totally. It's essentially a freestyle kinda thing and the way they do things is up to date and pretty much perfect for me. I'm doing the 2.5 hr classes pretty much every night, but i really don't know if i can give up everything else to study religiously under this dude for 2 years. It's a dilemma. Angus Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.
SaiFightsMS Posted January 13, 2002 Posted January 13, 2002 I guess it all depends on how much you really want to be the absolute best.
