cathal Posted November 5, 2004 Posted November 5, 2004 Hi, Anyone know where I can learn some good sword maintenance? I am going to be getting a katana in a while I want to ensure it is taken care of. Thanks everyone .The best victory is when the opponent surrendersof its own accord before there are any actualhostilities...It is best to win without fighting.- Sun-tzu
Shorinryu Sensei Posted November 5, 2004 Posted November 5, 2004 Hi, Anyone know where I can learn some good sword maintenance? I am going to be getting a katana in a while I want to ensure it is taken care of. Thanks everyone Change the oil and filter every 3,000 strokes, and be sure to wipe all of the blood off it after each use. OK...can I help it if I'm in one of "those moods" today? I've had a middle-of-the-road, 440 steel katana and wakasashi (sp?) for a lot of years and have never had any evidence of rust or discoloration on it, and other than keeping them sheathed when not in use, and wiping off the blade if it gets touched (I like to keep the skin oils off of it)....no other maintenance is necessary. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"

battousai16 Posted November 5, 2004 Posted November 5, 2004 ^pretty much^ if you want your sword to have a heavenly aura around it at all times, take iaido, and they'll show you ever little damn thing that you could possibly think of, and a few you never would, to keep your sword pristine through almost painful tradition. right down to keeping that chord thingy on the handle tied properly. needless to say, i never took it, else i'd know the name for that chord thingy just don't do anything mind bogglingly stupid with your sword, and it should be just fine. i've never done an all out cleaning for mine, and i've had no problems with it.
