An additional thought came to mind: epsom salts in the bath tub. Make sure you stretch every day. And after class when you get home visit the tub. Epsom salts do make a difference.

Perhaps a martial art system that you can train throughout your entire life would be more appropriate. If you're having trouble now imagine what it will be like 20 years from now

Actually, Tae Kwon Do the martial art IS something one can do for one's entire life. TKD the kicky, slappy, sport isnt, but that's another story, no?

Anyway. I'm 35, and have found that stretching is the key. Some things you just won't be able to do well. If you understand how the technique works well enough to help others learn it, then perhaps that's even better than kicking to the head. As I often say, "the first kick may not be to head level, but the third one will be!"

don't be discouraged rodan. Everyone has their limitations. Not all martial artists can do high flying kicks. Work with what you have. I believe you can still be a good figther without using the sidekick. You still have the front kick, round house kick, and reverse round house kick. I have won matches just by using the front kick. It all comes down to how well you know how to use your kicks..good luck

Since you have only recently started Tae Kwon Do training my guess is that your muscles are not strong enough for the movements you are doing. What to do about that? Very simple, listen you your body. If your hips hurt then take it easy. Try kicking with less speed and power and go through the motions. This will slowly strengthen your muscles without causing injury. Explain this to your instructor and if he is a good coach he will prob. tell you the same thing.

As a beginner, you have nowhere to go but forward!

The important thing, to echo several others, is to listen to your body. After 21 years of martial arts, and three knee surgeries (brought on by 17 years of carrying patients up and down stairs !) I can't do a lot of the spinny things. I can, however appreciate those who can do them.

It all depends on why you practice. If you seek self improvement and self defence ability, then the flashy techniques are irrelevent. The "flash" is valuable from the treaining standpoint.

In the Shotokan Kata Unsu there is a 360 degree jump, landing prone. The main benefit of this technique is in flexibility. I doubt the veracity of this technique in self defence setting. Similarly, I have taken care of many people who attempted jumpy-spinny-flashy things when attacked.

At 36 you have the advantage of marturity and patience. You don't need "flash".

Take it slow, stretch, & Ibuprofen (or ketoprofen-slightly easier on the stomach). I just started back in TKD Feb. after completely being away from MA for over 20yrs/I'm 42 now. I too have hip pain at times & just try to work through it.

I like seeing all this encouragement!!!

I too need it now and then! I can barely get out of bed the next day after a grueling class! (like tonight's) Talk about hip pain ... have 3 kids and then let's talk about hip pain!

Just work on those stretches ... increase the strength in the hip flexors, quads and hamstrings .... you'll see a difference in no time!

A little work on endurance helps too! (keep that huffing and puffing down to a minimum_ Run, jump rope, cardio kickbox!!!
