Reklats
What ever happened to getting to a point where you just had to kill your master and take his place if you wanted a higher rank? If we maintained some good old fashioned values we wouldn't have this problem.

AngelaG
I really have a problem with these people who claim to be more than they are. And it seems like there multiplying. Folks its a very rare thing traditionally speaking to be an eigth degree black belt in one art let alone a dozen. And it seems like everywhere i go there are people claming to be Grandmasters, Sokes, Kanchos, and whatever in literally several different martial arts. Now im not saying that these people didnt traing this many arts but they shouldnt claim to be what they are not. Sorry if i stepped on anyones toes but I think if you are one of these people you are doing the MA world a big unjustice. How can a legitimate 2nd or 3rd degree black belt who wants to open a school compete with a person who "claims" to be a grandmaster and the uneducated public has no way of knowing the difference. Take from this rant what you will but does anyone feel the same way???? I used to care but I guess I am happy enough at my club that it no longer seems to matter. The only belts that matter to me are the one's given to me by my sensei. They are a symbolism of all my hard work, and a person I respect's faith in me. The only time the self-elevated masters should be a problem is if they take new customers, screw them out of money, teach them a load of * and then leave all these disillusioned people out there who think MA is a load of cr*p and therefore will miss out on all it has to offer. But if people are stupid enough to go for the spangliest advert, the brightest uniforms and the longest names then maybe they deserve what they get. AngelaG
your organization allows you to open a school at 2nd dan I know a couple of very good nidans who I would prefer to have teaching me over some much higher grades I have seen. I have also met a very knowledgeable shodan who is very good at what she does, and also has the skill of being a good teacher. Teaching/Coaching ability are not linked to Martial Art ability. I know some awesome karateka who just are not articulate enough to be skillful teachers. Kicks
True story: Recently I was speaking to someone who owns and operates a Karate school (I can't remember which style, too many to keep up with) and the subject came up of transfering from one style to another. He said he would honor my rank of 4th degree if I transfered over to his school. Theory: OK, so I can go over to his school and be a 4th degree in Karate without knowing any of the katas or differences in execution of techniques. I can spend a little time there, just enough to get a warm and fuzzy feeling of his style of Karate, and then find another school that would honor my rank and do the same. Before long I'll have a long list of styles I'm a 4th degree in. This scenario may be a clue to how some people obtain so many high rankings in many different styles. Just a theory. when you create the world's largest trailer park, you're going to have tornadoes
Dijita
I just get annoyed by the amount of people who are 3rd degree black belt and have trained in the art for 4 years. Give me a break...
jarrettmeyer
Don't you have minimum time-in-grade requirements? In my school, you can progress as fast as your skill/body/sensai will let you until you hit brown belt, typically 3-4 years. (Unfortuneately, my school is a little McDojo-ish with about 16 grades and half grades including belts, half belts, belts with tips, etc.) Then you must wait at least a year before shodan. My sensai said that you can always tell what type of student you have by this, and a lot of his students quit in the 2nd or 3rd month of ikkyu. TBH nowadays I see someone like that, and I think "What a pillock!" and then I go and get on with my own training.
