The line between fancy and effective

In my humble opinion (the opinion of someone with only 14 months training and no real life application) if there is a more simple way of getting the effect you're going for than the move you've chosen that move is too 'fancy'.

 

In a tournament you may be able to go for something a little more fancy than the absolute basics to earn more points and risk being put on your backside, but you risk a lot more in a real fight.
