yeah sanchin is suppose to be the most important kata in all of goju. It looks simple but if you do it right it will really wear you out. it teaches you how to use your hara which is your lower abdomen, every technique should come from here.

The difference is that one comes from okinawa and the other is a japanized version of the later. In okinawan karate china hand is still quit evident while japanese karate it is all empty hand and is in my opinion a water down version of the original. Now before I start a flame war I think japanese karate is very strong especially kyokushin but really it is like a style of kickboxing okinawan karate is something else entirely

Interesting but I disagree with you that Japanese Karate is a "watered down" version of the original cause from what I see so far, I would place Shotokan at the same level as Goju Ryu none of them is any better than the other.

I would politely disagree, I am not saying that shotokan is not strong but it bears little in common with okinawan karate, which is where the art was born in a combination with chinese martial art and the indigneous fighting art simply known as Ti. I have trained with both japanese and okinawan practioners and with out a doubt the japanese have altered the original system. Now I never stated that one was better than the other, that was your staement, I think both are good but in Japan's rush to make karate her own she left some things out

Any of you know Kimo Wall? He's a travelling Goju Ryu guy that will be swinging by our dojo sometime this month. From what I hear, he is extremely talented and a bit of a character. He's pretty close with the head of my style (Shorinkan Kobayashi Shorin Ryu) for North America (Doug Perry), as he was one of Doug Perry's spotters during Vietnam. He also attends one of our camps periodically, I think.

My instructor says that training with him would be a wonderful opportunity.

I was just wondering if any of you had heard of him or had the chance to train with him.

dingyuan, goju ryu belong to Naha-te lineage and shotokan originally comes from Shuri-te , the characteristics of shotokan as a shuri-te should be natural stance ,natural movement ,natural breathing circular techniques ,during the time funakoshi introduced karate to Japan he had to adapt the techniques with Japanese tradition so all the stances slowly started to get wider and lower compare to original shuri-te and justification was to create strong muscles . Goju ryu from other hand kept most of original characteristics of Naha-te like controlled breathing, half moon steps, open hand techniques, ect.

Also weapons is not part of shotokan but Goju ryu has okinawan weapon system incorporated .

...although many Shotokan schools now incorporate weapons.
