GrayGhost Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 I really need a an answer to this. Has anyone done Muay Thai and Kickboxing? And if you have, who do you think would win in a street fight? Or should I just say forget it and take straight western boxing? "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." ~Frank Herbert, Dune
Jerry Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 How long is a piece of string? Are you looking for a sport to use in a street fight? That is a very dangerous game you are playing if your answer to my last question is "yes". A martial artist does not take up MA for the sake of whipping butt in a street fight. To us it is a way of living. Kicking butt is an added bonus if the end result is you walk away and attacker not. I will answer your question .... Yes, KickBoxing has surely kept my head on my shoulders in street fights, but that was not why I took kickboxing up back in 1993 (1991 for a few months). Also keep in mind that you are not the next world champ after a 3 monthe training session. I would tel you to take up kickboxing (or any MA for that matter), but your heart must be in it and you should also do it for the right reasons. Good luck! Shane Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 kickboxing vs. muay thai You really need to check out different kickboxing schools because a lot of kickboxing programs are using muay thai techniques. Muay Thai is so awsome that a lot of schools have included some thai techniques and training methods into their training. You cant really say which is going to work better because there is so many factors to take into consideration when looking at a question like that. But I will say Muay Thai is a prime choice but look into all of your option you might find a program that uses muay thai techniques and then some to give you a even more well rounded program good luck A True Martial Arts Instructor is more of a guide than anything, on your way to developing the warrior within yourself!!!!!
jedimc Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 I thought Muay Thai and kickboxing were exactly the same. http://jedimc.tripod.com/ma.html - what MA do you do, this is my poll.
GrayGhost Posted October 24, 2004 Author Posted October 24, 2004 No the styles are different. In kick boxing is resembles boxing more, where you have your hands close to your face. In Muay Thai you have them up and away from your face, not by much but more than kickboxing. And in kickboxing you are not allowed to use your knee or elbows but in muay thai you are allowed to. Jerry Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 Yes, basically you can see kikcboxing as a combination of boxing and full contact karate ... ? MT is as you have seen in the movie "KickBoxer". Full contact KickBoxing also only requires a minumum of 8 kick in a round and therefore is more based on boxing in that case. Semi contact or continuous is the same as fullcontact, but your contact is much lighter (you have to control and get warnings for hitting too hard) and you fight on a marked floor opposed to a "boxing" ring. Light contact is basically the same as Karate, where you fight for points and gets stopped at each point scored. MT is a case of Hitting with knees, elbows and low kicks. We do MT training for body conditioning. "You do not truly know someone until you fight him." - Seraph"To be the best, you must be the best." - Me
Vito Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 there are a lot of threads on this so ill be brief. muay thai is the most hardcore, best (yea, i said it, best) striking art in the world. and just for the record, taking up a MA just to be good at fightingon the street doesnt make you a bad person. lost of people do it. its okay. really. GrayGhost Posted October 26, 2004 Author Posted October 26, 2004 Vito have you taken kickboxing classes as well as muay thai or are you just commenting? I'm not asking to be a BAD * *, I just want something to complement my BJJ and JUDO training. "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
