Gloi Posted January 11, 2002 Posted January 11, 2002 I got 7 Samurai on video recently and love it. In fact I've just ordered another of the same director's (Akira Kurosawa) films, Rashomon and am looking forward to watching that. Which other films of his should I make a point of getting? I was going to get Yojimbo next. [ This Message was edited by: Gloi on 2002-01-11 06:45 ]

Don Gwinn Posted July 5, 2002 Posted July 5, 2002 There's a decent telling of the story about halfway through Ronin with Robert De Niro. This is not a MA movie and really has nothing to do with Samurai or Japan, but you should still see it. Best Car Chase EVER. De Niro. Jean Reno. Awesome. One of your great-great-grandfathers was one of the 47? About what time period would that be--about 1850-1900? My great-grandfather was born in 1899, so about that, right? I thought that story went back a lot farther than that, but I wouldn't really know. I rented Sanjuro[/i and Samurai I today. Good stuff, though Sanjuro is more interesting. ____________________________________* Ignorant Taekwondo beginner.http://www.thefiringline.com

And yes, you'll love Yojimbo and it's sequel - Sanjuro. I also recommend Ran, which has the best photographed battle scene I've ever seen, and is a splendid movie all throughout. There's also The Hidden Fortress - which was a major inspiration source for Star Wars. Other great movies of his that I've seen are Ikiru and Red Beard (no fights though, be advised well, almost no fights) I hear good things about Kagemusha and Dersu Uzala, but haven't had a chance to see them. In truth, I'd watch any Kurosawa movies I can get my hands on, if I were you. They've started stocking some of them at video stores, since new DVD's have been coming out on Criterion Collection. Just look around through foreign movies section. And they're (almost) all on amazon.com Oh, guys: if you're not sure what a movie is about, or a remake of, or whatnot, just look on imdb.com
Phantasmatic Posted October 3, 2002 Posted October 3, 2002 Those are all good movies, I like Chushingura - The Story of the 47 Ronin the best. I have it on DVD. I haven't seen Yojimbo yet though, supposedly it's good. "Which one is more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?" - Obi Wan Kenobi
LeaF Posted October 3, 2002 Posted October 3, 2002 Chushingura - The Story of the 47 Ronin When was this made (are there more then one version of it. I read the book and absolutly loved it, wouldn't mind seeing the movie Goju Ryu Karate-do and Okinawan Kobudo, 17 Years Old 1st kyu Brown Belt in in Goju Ryu Karate-do, & Shodan in Okinawan KobudoGiven enough time, any man may master the physical. With enough knowledge, any man may become wise. It is the true warrior who can master both....and surpass the result.I AM CANADIAN
stuey-san Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 yeah the story of the 47 ronin goes something like asano and kira who were 2 daimyo's (lords) were called to the emperors service, and thus were supposed to present the emporer with gifts, they gave the emporer gifts of equal value, but afterwars kira gave gave the emporer an extra bag of gold to be viewed more heavily in his favour, angered at this asano drew a knife on kira but in the emporers presence, and for this shame he was supposed to commit seppuku. a ronin is a masterless samurai, and as their lord was dead, his samurai (47 of them) became ronin, seeking revenge on their masters death they went to kira and forced him to commit seppuku, but because of this act the samurai also had to commit seppuku, like the hugest act of loyalty whatsoever, and i think they celebrate it every year on the 14th of december in japan........some of this story might be in accurate as its all from memory so if anyone has a more accurate verion i wudnt mind hearing it Kicking to the head is like punching to the toes
equaninimus Posted January 21, 2004 Posted January 21, 2004 Compare the WWII era Chushingura with Kurosawa's version from the later 1960s. It shows the major shift in attitude toward authority in Japanese society in that period. There have always been Starkadders at Cold Comfort Farm!
