I just started reading the book Living the martial way and it seems to be an excellent book. I was wondering if anyone else has read this and what they thought. I'm also reading the five rings and was wondering if anyone had other book suggestions.

Lee's tao of jeet kune do first. it puts the mind set in you.

the funny thing is that i know im wrong and i know your right, yet you keep argueing like it will change my mind. you should really know, you dont have to be right to win:)

I thought that "Living The Martial Way" was a really good book too. I loaned it to a friend and haven't seen it since. I thought that "barefoot zen" by Nathan Johnson was also a really thought provoking book. I don't buy into his whole viewpoint but I thought that it was interesting and very well prepared.

Kodo: Ancient Ways by Kensho Furuya

Traditions by Dave Lowry

Zen in the Martial Arts by Joe Hyams

are all books that are also excellent in my opinion, but so far any of the ones listed are great additions.

Morgan comes off a little strong to some in Living the Martial Way, and sometimes even comes off looking somewhat egotistical, but overall the good of the book far outweighs anything negative...

I was just given Living the Martial Way by my Okinawan karate instructor. He said it is an excellent read no matter what style you are because it really is about living the martial way, not about promoting living the martial way in some particular style. I haven't had a chance to read it though.

I would have said "Kodo: Ancient Ways", except that Kensho Furuya is a jacka**. I e-mailed him concerning a question I had about ki. He then sent me a snotty e-mail back about his not writing anything that might be considered speculation. It had a very aloof tone to it. Not at all what I would expect from a zen priest. He then went ahead and posted a portion of my request for his students and made it into something that it was not intended to be. As far as I am concerned, he is an arrogant a**hole first class. Sorry, I don't mean to offend anyone, but this is the way I feel.

wow..that sucks...I have no personal experience with Furuya one way or another...still think the book is quality reading, though...

...and he was the only one that really impressed me with anything he said on that Discover Channel martial arts special....
