turonaga Posted November 15, 2004 Posted November 15, 2004 are we gonna talk about bagua or are we gonna keep jerkin off over the pronunciation or what the word means... i for one am terribly interested in this art and would like to learn something about it. can someone who knows something about speak up. i heard somewhere it was based off of an eight sided figure, sort of like a math equation that was developed by a shaolin monk that cuts off angles can ANYONE WHO REALLY KNOWS SOMETHING VERIFY PLEASE.. it would be very much appreciated well, accdg to my friend it was developed by tung hai chuan but nobody knows for sure who founded it. it moves circular motion etc. its much too complicated for me. i mean to learn and practice it but i've no problema sparring with it why did we surrender lord?
Zhong Gau Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 no. the zhang as in baguazhang is NOT puffy or swollen. which is why i mentioned 'palm'. in chinese, it is almost always 'eight trigram palm', not 'fist'. Yeah, but isn't the nuance something like 'continuously changing stance' or 'approach' Ah! Mantis Grasshopper, i think you would do very nicely on a bowl of rice!
Zhong Gau Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 regaurding characters: many different character in chinese have pronunciations that our anglican ears can't differentiate so they all sound like a similar word , Zhang, for instance: ba gua zhang zhang gung/zhong gau zhang xiamen zhang hua yu zhang gee/gong gi most characters have multiple meanings that can only be deciphered through parcing the context. Zhong Gau Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 since y'all like to gritch about the meaning of words so much perhaps you should read the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. Ah! Mantis Grasshopper, i think you would do very nicely on a bowl of rice!

Zhong Gau Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 I have much respect for Drunken Monkey and MartialMan until they start fighting like children . But, I think it's been established, Pa-Kua/Bagua are definately "kung-fu". the nice thng about this discussion is it is very much a circular expression, a dance even, of two opponents sizing each other up and deciding when to pounce. Ah! Mantis Grasshopper, i think you would do very nicely on a bowl of rice!
