I've trained for about 2 yrs in Rossi Kun Tao, it's an Indonesian system that is much like Silat. It's not as artistic as other indonesian silats, but it is very brutal and to the point.

Anyone else train in this system?

How many schools?

I don't know how many schools are out there. My instructor was Ron Kosokowski. Rossi is the guy that brought Kun Tao to the USA from Indonesia. He had a school, so I am thinking other students of his might have started their own schools, besides Ron.

Indonesian Kuntao *is* a Silat. Though the terms vary from group to group, an accurage generalizatoin would be to say that "Kuntao Silat" is a name for any mixed Chinese-Indonesian art practiced in Indonesia (IOW, Silat with Chinese influences). This varies from Pentjak and Poukilan Silats in those very same influences.

Beyond that, any blanked term about "Silat" (such as "artistic"), is really a statement made from ignorance, and likely made by someone who has seen some silat styles and improperly generallized.

(as a note, there are also southern-Chinese styles called "Kuntaw", but I have little information on them.

In answer to your specific question, I've not seen Rossi's style... do you have a website I could see it on?

There should be info about Rossi Kun Tao there, although it's hard to find much at the website.

Ugh, after reading that page I see there's been disagreement between Filipino GMs just like what happened in all the Korean arts. But I really don't care. It's probably all the same basic system anyway. Nasty, that is. 8)

little question.

aside from the silat taught at jkd places around my parts of the world, silat isn't really that widespread.

i have come across a few schools that offer silat.

my question is how do you tell if one is qualified?

i mean, are there instant warning signs or names that should be there?

i know that it's kinda hard to track lines but is there any 'foolproof' way of checking?

Some Silat arts (Seni Gayong and, I assume, Mande Muda) have international organizations which track and certify people.

But my general experience is that Silat instructors trace a liniage to someone you can validate in the community et-al, and who will vouch for them... often several.
