On the street I have seen all kinds of stupid things happen because someone looked at someone else "the wrong way". And it can go as far as killing. I wouldn't say "insane", though. In 1996 the USA suicide rate was roughly 10.6, in Canada it was 12.5. I wouldn't call that insane. The fact that the murder rate is 400% higher in the US is insane. At any rate, I'll take a higher suicide rate over a higher murder rate, given the grim choice. I'm not afraid that I might kill myself. It's the other people who scare me. Wap "Fighting fighting. tommarker Posted October 6, 2004 Share Posted October 6, 2004 It's a funny balance. Some criminals will use eye contact to determine if you are a hard target or a soft target. If you go out of your way to avoid their stare, you can risk looking like a punk and therefore open yourself up to more problems. Getting in a staring contest could bring similar problems. The trick I think is to meet eye contact, acknowledge it, and then continue on your business. That way there is no challenge thrown down, and no sign of weakness on your part.
