GoGoGo
What is Kung Fu? I've heard people say it's not a martial art but then there's songs like the Kung Fu Fighting song. There are people who say they are learning Kung Fu. So what is it, and what type of fighting (if it is fighting) is it? Learner GoGoGo
Ricochet
Yes, kung fu is a martial art (I don't know why anyone would claim otherwise). There are many different styles of kung fu, however. Where I learn it, we do Hung Gar and Choy Lee Fut, for example. But, basically, you got your punches, you got your kicks. Not really a grappling martial art. Interestingly, "kung fu" can be used to mean anything you're good at - it goes to its basic meaning, though it is most commonly used to refer to Chinese martial arts. GoGoGo
Ohhh. Ok thanks. I think I would like to learn Kung Fu out of all of them. Got any idea on what style is best? Learner GoGoGo
Ricochet
Yep. The style you like enough to continue working at. My advice to you would be to, as the song says, shop around. Go to various martial arts classes in your area, talk to the instructors, ask to sit in on the class and see what goes on (not to mention find out the cost). Also, don't limit your search to just kung fu. You might end up liking something you never even thought about before. I used to take karate, but there was no karate club at my college, only kung fu. So I went, and I've been hooked ever since. It's important to keep your options open, otherwise, you never know what you'll miss.
JerryLove
Actually, it would be far more correct to say "martial arts are kung-fu". Like the difference between "ducks are birds" and "birds are ducks". https://www.clearsilat.com
Drunken Monkey
....martial arts require kung fu...... sorry. couldn't resist. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite." KungFuMan
IE. Martial arts require HARD WORK. KFM Only time and commitment will make your Traditional "style" good and give you real knowledge. "Marry" your chosen system as opposed to just flirting with it. Make it your partner for life and you will see how well and how complete it really is.
JerryLove
"kung fu" isn't "hard work", it's "skill aquired through hard work". A good chef has "good kung fu", as does a skilled martial artist. https://www.clearsilat.com
thaiboxerken
As far as martial art context goes, Kung Fu simply refers to Chinese martial arts.
