username9 Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 As far as I know this is roughly true - if anyone knows better then please do enlighten us: Capoiera is a Brazilian martial art but was "invented" by african slaves. It was a martial art based on striking but had to be disguised as a dance so their masters did not catch on to what was happening. The aim is not to "beat-up" your opponent but to "out-do" him/her y pulling off the most spectacular moves and by dominating the space. it is full of acrobatic moves including flips and somersaults. The music is there to keep a beat going to which the players will move to. they assume the stance which is like a dance from one side to the other and it's name escapes me - but anyway. Then the fun starts. Like I say - it's non-aggressive but IF used as a fighting art it can be devastating. Hope that has shed a little light on the subject. Always interesting to find where Martial Arts originate from. ju Jitsu originally came from India If Iam not mistaken!!!!.....but that is for another day!
Maddwraph Posted October 2, 2004 Posted October 2, 2004 yes, capoiera is fighting while dancing in a way. u not suppose to block but rather dodge. there r grapples in capoiera, but predmontally its strikes. im my class u wear a uniform similar to that of otehr martial arts like karate or jujuitsu and instead of a belt, it has a rope. the lyrics to the songs posted r there becasue capoiera theres a lot of singing/ when u do the roda which is a circle with two people fighting inside, there is singing from the people outside the roda, and instruments playing. hope i can be of help. Im brasilian, but live in the united states. Really enjoying martial arts.
shanemm Posted October 3, 2004 Posted October 3, 2004 thanks, seems interesting. There are two types of people in the world. Those that find excuses and those that find a way.-Unknown
