miguksaram
Thanks for that info Thai. Gcav...have you ever been to Japan to confirm this. BTW...If these techniques are effective in combat...I mean a free flowing resisting opponent type of combat then that is great. However, what I can't stand is all the mystic crap and made up history that tends to follow when someone is ninja. It takes a big man to cry, but it takes an even bigger man to point at him and laugh
thaiboxerken
There are modern-day ninjas, however, they don't call themselves ninjas. We call them special forces of the various military branches. They don't do all that much hand-to-hand though. Phrost
There are modern-day ninjas, however, they don't call themselves ninjas. We call them special forces of the various military branches. They don't do all that much hand-to-hand though. THANK YOU. I've been saying this for years. Warfare is warfare. In reality, modern "Martial" arts are 75% marksmanship and 25% infantry tactics. The U.S. Army doesn't even devote more than a day or two to hand-to-hand combat in Basic Training. So most people who consider themselves "Martial Artists" are little more than "Historical Re-enactors", unless they're actually using their skills against another person in which case they're Sport Fighters. Unless you're just a psychopath, or dressed up for Halloween, there's no reason outside of a warped sense of ego gratification to pretend that you're somehow a 'shadow warrior' by playing with swords and shuriken in your backyard or at the neighborhood strip mall dojo. If you're doing it because you enjoy reliving eastern history, that's fine. Just don't cross over that subtle line (as so many have done) where fantasy creeps into reality and you become a parody of every 80's action flick that ever made it to VHS. Shane
Find a school that you can really enjoy going to training. Get out there and watch a few different classes, see if the school offers a free class if they do take it. After looking around decide what one you would enjoy the most. Unless the person actually has a specific need to learn how to defend himself, in which case, finding the school that makes him feel good is pretty poor advice. He might enjoy a good Tae Bo class, but that won't help keep him from getting beat down walking to his car late at night. thaiboxerken
Phrost is correct, one must find something that actually has some practical application. That is, unless, they don't care about actually knowing how to fight or defend themselves. Drunken Monkey
.....isn't the actual ninjutsu (ninpo?) mostly about how to climb walls and trees and how to hide and stuff? post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite." thaiboxerken
No, it's about techniques to trick your opponent. I watch Naruto, and that's why I'm informed. Wounded Ronin
You do not want to study ninjutsu. Look here: http://b u l l s h i d o.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9653 Look at the kinds of pathetic people that get into that. I wanted to learn ninjutsu...back when I was like 12 years old. But I am no longer interested in Hatsumi's suspiciously well detailed re-construction of what a bunch of mercenaries back in the 1500s practiced in the woods each day. A lot of the stuff that he pushes as "ninjutsu", like his self-defense patterns and kata, there could not have been detailed physical evidence substantiating. The most likely explanation is that he's just making it up and making a lot of money off of it from people who have nothing more exciting in their lives than pretending to be ninjas. Hatsumi aside, go do a Google search on Rick Tew. Look at the videos he has uploaded on his main website. His students aren't that good in the sparring videos; they keep twisting their heads away as they attack because they're not used to getting hit in the face. Twisting the head away as you fight with someone in standup is a bad habit that any striker with his or her salt drills away ASAP. The fact that all the sparring videos on the site involves a lot of head-turning shows that the people in the videos are inexperienced and not too good. You don't want to be like them; why spend time and money learning that "ninjutsu" when you could become a halfway decent striker with less egotistical pretense just by doing boxing, muay thai, or sanshou.
