Shorinryu Sensei Posted September 30, 2004 Author Posted September 30, 2004 what are we as Martial Artists doing about this epidemic? i personnally haven't done anything but complain, but if anyone has any ideas, or a plan already in action, i'd love to start. The problem is...there's nothing that we can do about it, short of fire bombing their dojo's or walking in the door and challenging them to a fight. Neither prospect is realistic. Claiming false rank isn't a crime. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"

We should do what Shorinryu Sensei did and decline to take part in it. If someone gives you a honorary rank in the aim of claiming one back...kick them in the nuts! Or at least don't accept it! We won't stop idiots doing it so just do your bit!
Shorinryu Sensei Posted October 1, 2004 Author Posted October 1, 2004 In hindsight, I wish I would have politely declined the "honor" he was giving me with that 3rd Dan certificate, but like I said, at the time he was a very good friend...and I was taken by surprise by it. I did tell him later when we were alone that I felt a bit insulted by his request for me to give him a certificate in return. I didn't realize that he was "rank collecting" and gathering rank from many different people besides me at the time. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"
delta1 Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Hindsight is allways better... Actually, since you had no idea this was comeing, you probably did the right thing. You tactfully accepted an honor, given as an 'honorary' award. When his intentions were made clear, you refused to be part of the charade. You have nothing to be ashamed of, and this did serve as a lesson, and a dang good example, for your students. Freedom isn't free!
Shorinryu Sensei Posted October 1, 2004 Author Posted October 1, 2004 Thanks for that. He also wanted me to join his organization...The American Korean Karate Association (Now defunct I think), and I told him "Ray, I don't do Korean karate"..but he just wanted a mix in his group. I wasn't interested. I had taught his sizable class (70+ people) several times and given seminars that all of his students attended. His people ate up what I gave them and screamed for more. What he was teaching his students was very basic technique, with no practical defenses against the "grab" or weapons. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"
delta1 Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 That is sad. Guy has a class interested in learning, and all he can give them is a few basics and a wall that miraculously sprouts rank certificates. I've seen this with TKD people, where you can show them a few principles and how to extrapolate applications, and they just take off. Others look at you like 'Do I have to know this for my belt test?' Most of them don't get into this until after black. My opinion is that this is a mistake, but on the other hand, everyone doesn't learn like me so I shouldn't be judgmental. Freedom isn't free!
Shorinryu Sensei Posted October 1, 2004 Author Posted October 1, 2004 I found it interesting at the 1st seminar that I taught in his school, that at the end of the 2 hour session...that the majority wanted to do more. Some people had to leave, but most stayed for another hour and a half. Afterwards, I had a group approach me and ask if there was anybody in their area (I lived 240 miles away from where this seminar was taught) that taught this system. There isn't. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"
delta1 Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Well, now that you are a bb in his system, maybe you should think about doing a monthly class in his area! Could be worth it if enough of them sign up! Freedom isn't free!
Shorinryu Sensei Posted October 1, 2004 Author Posted October 1, 2004 Well, now that you are a bb in his system, maybe you should think about doing a monthly class in his area! Could be worth it if enough of them sign up! Well, other than the fact that he's been dead for 7-8 years now and his class and association went with him...not a bad idea! He went from basically the "top of the heap" in this state in regards to putting on good tournaments and being a nice guy...to falling down into the "lower than a rattlesnakes belly" catagory before he died. No one would attend his tournaments except his own students, or have anything to do with him. Long story as to why, but I also would have nothing to do with him the last few years before he died. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"
delta1 Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Sad to hear. You can only wonder what drives people to some extremes. Freedom isn't free!
