smarter than your teacher

That's why I was homeschooled. Student=Teacher

therefore, Intelligence of Teacher = Intelligence of Student.

Except in first grade when your mom is your teacher. And usually there aren't any issues of student surpassing the teacher then.

I've been in some class situations in other systems where I was cefinately more knowlegable than the instructors. I could pick out the principles in their own moves, and was better at extrapolating different applications. But I still learned a lot in those classes. If you assume you are intellectually superior and don't listen and learn, you'll soon find yourself the least knowlegable person there. Furthermore, these guys showed me a thing or two on the matts, where it really counts. Doesn't matter how smart you are there... can you apply your knowlege?! Learn from their experience, and if you really are that smart, dig deeper and build on what they show you. But don't go in with a superior attitude and try to teach the class.

let's see.

my first sifu wasn't/isn't an educated man.

he learnt his kung fu in a different age in a different world to mine.

i know and understand things that he cannot imagine.

for all intent purposes i am the smarter person.

he can still teach me a thing or two....hundred.

I pretty much agree with most of the replies here... Maybe you are more intelligent than the teacher, but chances are they're more knowledgable. The fact is, you're going to get some abysmal teachers, it happens.

If you're really bothered with it, try and get to know them. If you really want to milk them of knowledge, you want to get to know how they work. Teacher's are people too, they make mistakes. Try talking to them privately. If that doesn't work, just carry on with what you're doing. The information is all out there, you just need to work a bit harder to get there. 8)

Great point!

plus, the argument of being "smarter" than someone else, seems rather subjective. As an "old school" disc jockey, I had to learn the basic workings of a tranmitter... plate current, frequency modulation, and things which are no longer required knowledge for an on-air talent. These are things my current MA master has no concept of. If I choose to make the argument, I could say I do have more knowledge than him. He has also been studying the MAs for over 40 years, and he will always have more knowledge than me. (Plus, even at 60, he can still take me).

I understand your dilema though, and I would say that if you have truly reached a level where your instructor can no longer help you acheive more knowledge, then perhaps it is time to change. But I would suggest speaking to him/her about this, and let your feelings and concerns be known.

Student: "Why did you hit that guy with a chair? Why didn't you use your karate?"

Master: "Hitting him with a chair was the only karate I could think of at the time."

Lesson: Practice until you don't have to think.

might've been my fault....

i just assumed that we were talking about teachers of martial arts.

anyway.

how often do you hear kids say that they are smarter than their teacher?

and how often is that really the case?

are/were you smarter than your math teachers?

physics? biology? chemistry?

do/did you know more history and more of the circumstances around the history?

does/did your reading of a poem compare to your english teachers'?

i think the only subjects where you can possibly have an edge over the teachers, prodigies excluded, are the computor sciences.

smarter than the teachers?

or

just more smart-a$$?

Well, 'smart' is a very ambiguous description. There is information, insight, and common sense. One can have plenty of information in one area, and be completely ignorant on just about any other topic. One can have insight into human behavior, business dealings, numbers, concepts, shapes and forms. Common sense is so friggin' wide open, i won't even try to break it down into the various 'types.'

Personally, i like to look at everyone and find their strengths and weaknesses. I then gleen from their strengths and assist in their weaknesses. Of course, i do the opposite of that if they are trying to rip my nipples off. :brow:

Isnt it horrorably depressing to find out that your smarter than your teacher you feel like your wasting time and you spend most your time reading because you get everlything done earler why is it that someone would hire someone less intellagant then a student? any sujections?

yup! exactly! I've been in situations like that, where I'm smarter than my teacher, lol! Even though it's kinda funny to be smarter, I get really mad when the teacher's like: 'Oh? how do you know? I haven't heard or found that information anywhere'. Like: 'She's probably wrong or something'.

One teacher once said: 'Um.. I dont think that's right. I said: 'but it is!'

and the teacher said: 'ohh...humm...whatever!'
