ok.... i guess we've gone a little off topic.

but it leads to a valid point.

what do you classify as complete?

is complete the appropriate word to use?

does a style have to be complete to be good?

do you need to learn to use a knife if you know how to use a gun or a tank for that matter?

(how's that for a recovery?)

post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are.

nice save

i think HRD is complete in that it's really an MMA with all the hard work of seeking out systems done for you. you cover hand techniques, foot techniques, joint locks, ground fighting, all kinds of weapons, philosophy, history (even if it does clash with history books a bit), practical techniques, flashy worthless techniques; it really does have it all. not everything works for everyone, but it's really good to find out what works for you because you're exposed to everything. that, however, does not make it good. WC dosen't have everything that HRD has, but what it has it has well, and it transfers over. so... yeah.

so,

'complete' or 'comprehensive'?

Complete. How about one that ranks to black belt?(Funny thing in a Chinese system)

Complete. One that the instructor does not take your money and flee?

Complete. A complete undertanding of the system-per example-origin?

Complete. Like not having a thing lacking? Per eamples-discipline and method.

Complete. Can it be interpreted as a "completion" of the individual's self expression? per-"Wing Chun completes me"

Sometimes "complete" could be held in an absolute term like Chief, or perfect, which is not subject to comparison.

....that's why i'm not too keen on use of 'complete'.

it suggests too much.

it implies that it is well, 'complete', has everything, (is perfect?)

in my opinion, 'comprehensive' is a better word because it doesn't mean anything more than saying one has more things than the other.

yeah, i dig that, i guess i'm with you there. i've always felt a little funny calling HRD "complete"... comprehensive is much better, thank you.

Another way to look at the completeness of a system is to find out how many schools are associated with the style. a system that works and is easy to learn will have lots of schools, hence Hung Gar and Wah Lum. Systems that are difficult to learn like Hung Fot and Emei/Omei have only two or three schools in the entire country. My style has one school for gui lo and four for chinese. i have older brothers who teach to get by tight situations in thier lives but there are only three schools for my style in the US and you must be chinese or speak Cantonese/Taishanese/Viet to use two of them!

Ah! Mantis Grasshopper, i think you would do very nicely on a bowl of rice!
