SaiFightsMS Posted December 22, 2001 Posted December 22, 2001 Most of the old masters wrote poetry, did calligraphy, painted. Do you think we would become more well rounded if we too cultivated a fine art?
dreamer38f Posted December 22, 2001 Posted December 22, 2001 The martial arts includes mind training...why couldn't it be poetry or writing or painting. The creative side of the mind is partially what allows us to develop our bodies, or how else would we come up with these new and inventive excercises? remember the old saying...use it or lose it...well we must excercise the mind and the body. If you think you can't, then you must. If you must, you will.
SaiFightsMS Posted December 23, 2001 Author Posted December 23, 2001 You know they were also much more intune to their cultural heritage than we are. Do you think that is more a factor of the whole culture being more aware? We sure don't have much culture awareness now. Do you think that is more a factor of too much tv or the melting pot into which much culture of origin was lost?
Aikidoka Posted December 24, 2001 Posted December 24, 2001 Culture is no less present now than ever. Culture is something that all people learn during the process of socialisation. The reason that people seem less culture aware is because our cultures are far less distinct than a hundred years ago. Entire populations are no longer isolated enough to have a set of ethics and norms distinctly different from other populations. So our modern culture could now be divided not into national cultures but into continental cultures, and perhaps eventually all culture will merge seamlessly.
Tobias_Reece Posted December 24, 2001 Posted December 24, 2001 Hey, looks like AikidoKa has been studying some sociology, just like me!!!! But in seriousness.....I do write poetry (but doesn't everyone). I think it does help my training, and it makes me a better person (somehow) C ya "You Are Never Given A Dream Without Also Being Given The Power To Make It True.
