zerohour Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 I've heard alot of great things about BJJ, and i've been on the receiving end of some effective Judo moves (from my Sensei, who used to do Judo). So I was wondering what the main difference is between the two. Also, can anybody give me a rundown of what Jujutsu is, and how it compares to BJJ and Judo?
cross Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 This is just some very general information that should set you on your way.So I was wondering what the main difference is between the two. Judo: Main focus on throws/takedowns with some ground work. Bjj: Main focus on ground work with some throws/takedowns. Also, can anybody give me a rundown of what Jujutsu is, and how it compares to BJJ and Judo? Jujutsu basically is the art that came before karate, aikido and judo. It includes the aspects of each of these arts. Like I said, this is very brief. If you need more specific info on a certain aspect im sure myself or many of the other member will be able to help you out.
Treebranch Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 It depends on whether you are studying something you enjoy doing, because you don't enjoy doing it you won't be any good at it. They are all good in different ways. The only difference is that JJ includes weapons training which is why I study it. 47MartialMan Posted September 19, 2004 Posted September 19, 2004 I believe, and anyone may correct me, that Judo resulted or "came" from Jiu Jitsu. It's founer, Jigarno Kano, wanted a "less" aggressive form of Jiu Jitsu.
SevenStar Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 judo came from jujutsu. he didn't want it less agressive - judo is actually VERY agressive. he wanted if "safer" that way it could be easily be practiced by the masses. also, by having a safer style, he was able to introduce randori - freesparring. jiu jitsu stems from them both. as for the spellings jujutsu/jiu jutsu, jujutsu is the correct term. the latter is one of the romanizations but is considered incorrect. This spelling was adopted by bjj, however -I'm not sure why. Perhaps merely to distinguish the name from jujutsu, as they are different arts.
47MartialMan Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 I stand corrected from "less aggressive", to "safer".
SevenStar Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 that is why the strikes, spine locks and leg loacks were pretty much removed from the curriculum. some schools will teach the atemi at black belt level, however, I'm not sure how many teach the forbidden locks.
Shane Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 This is just my opinion I am not a Judo player and I do not study BJJ. I have trained with those who study these two arts and Jujitsu is an art I do study and teach. I see Judo as a sport and it is, but I do believe it can be very useful in self defense situation, I do not enjoy being thrown by a Judo player and would not enjoy it at all if thrown on the street without matts. BJJ I see as an awsome Martial Art for the street and for Sport. This is a style that domintes the ground the techniques are amazing. Jujitsu,Jujutsu, jiu jitsu etc. (BJJ included) I dont see it as a style, I see it more as what works in Combat. I know there is hundreds of styles of Jujitsu out there and they are all different in different ways but most focus on Combat effective techniques. I believe that Jujitsu is training for pure combat self defense. So what I'm trying to say is any technique that is effective in Combat should be found in Jujitsu training and if it is not then it should be added and trained. Once again this is only my opinion. But when asked about martial arts those 3 names always come up!!! It just depends on what your looking for as an individual!!!!! A True Martial Arts Instructor is more of a guide than anything, on your way to developing the warrior within yourself!!!!!
