Rick
Has anyone here ever been attacked by someone with a weapon... I've had knives pulled on me twice. First time he put it away and the second one he was trying to kill me... He didn't obviously but i spent 2 weeks in hospital cos his mates stomped on my head really bad. WapCaplet
Fortunately I've never had to suffer the nightmare of getting attacked with a weapon. I used to get in a few fights in school (15+ years ago), but that was long before I ever started taking karate. Haven't been in any fights since I started martial arts. Which I think is the idea... P.A.L
I've been attacked by flying objects , she aims for 10 points areas but thanks God up to now nothing more than 6-7 points.
Master Jules
LOL P.A.L I live with one of those too.... On the topic though....yes I have been attacked with everything from knives to pool cues and beer bottles. Working as a bouncer for 19 years, you come up against all kinds of stuff.....you just gotta be fast. In a knife situation..resign yourself to the fact the unless youre REALLY good, youre probably gonna get cut. In those situations, I tend to lean more towards my Aikijujitsu stuff, and usually end up breaking an arm or wrist somewhere along the line....I havent been cut bad, but when a weapon is pulled, I retaliate all out and they usually go to the hospital. ~Master Jules......aka "The Sandman""I may be a trained killer......but Im really a nice guy"
Bad_Vibes
Damn, that's some rough stuff I've only taken a tennis racket to the head. My wife didn't like the critism I was giving her. It was a cheap racket so it gave and the impact wasn't to bad.
Reklats
Master Jules - why don't you carry pepper spray or a tazer for situations like those?
gheinisch
I've been lucky and have never been attacked with a weapon, as a matter of fact I've never been in a fight except with my brothers. I hope it stays that way. Master Jules Our Hanshi and you seem to have some things in common. He used to do some body guarding and bouncing back in his day. He says that he has had all kinds of things to contend with. He tells us a story of the time that he was stab in the arm. He tells the story to get some points across to us. He was bouncing in a Miami club and had escorted a guy out. The guy didn't resist and went out the door with little problem, but once outside the door the man turned toward him with his hand in his jacket pocket (first sign of trouble) he then started to come in closer which our Hanshi says was a mistake on his part. Never let someone get into your personnel space unless you want them too. In a flash the man who seemed to be no problem pulled a knife from his pocket and stabbed him in the right bicep area, to the bone. Hanshi immediately distanced himself from the man to regain his senses. He says there is no worse feeling than a 6'5" man standing in front of with a knife and a big smile on his face. Our Hanshi's arm was useless so when the man started in on him again he used a cresent kick to disarm the man and then a back kick to the man's breast bone. He was wearing hard heeled shoes so the kick split the mans breast bone and sent him flying into a metal door which cracked the back of his head and then the asphalt did a number on the front of his face. To the hospital he went along with our Hanshi. A couple lessons learned from this is to always be alert, the one who is cooperative one second may not be the next. And never let someone get into your space. Someone can have a sword and swing it all he wants as long as he is ten feet away from you. Can't hurt you there. He also said that the police told him that he could be charged since he had disarmed the man and then continued the attack which caused all the damage. He wasn't however! All good lessons that he learned the hard way. He never made those kind of mistakes again. We're glad he is passing his knowledge on to us. Master Jules
I do carry a 16 1/2 inch collapsable baton which works well in close quarter situations (longer ones are just to long). You also have to contend with self defense laws, and be very careful not to "over do it". EG...if a man comes at me with a knife, and I lock him up and take away the knife, he no longer poses a threat to my life, so I cant take the knife and then stab him in the heart... I have also done bodyguard work for the last 10 years, and you do come across some serious threats, just be careful with your level of response, especially in this day and age of "Ill sue you"..... But my motto......Id rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6 ~Master Jules......aka "The Sandman""I may be a trained killer......but Im really a nice guy"
gheinisch
Our Hanshi has told us that same motto Master Jules. And you are absolutely right, in today's world the the one who is attacked is often made out to be the bad guy unless he's the one who ends up in the hospital. "I know I pulled a knife on him but he had no right to break my arm like that". It's sad that some of this cases actually make it to the courts. Hanshi says he probably should have stopped after the threat was taken out of the picture(knife) but his instincts, reaction and momentum carried him through with the back kick. Be careful out there! Rick
These are some pretty good responses, thanks peoples... It really is a nightmare being attacked with weapons and yeah we all have to be really careful. It might sound odd, but i have a friend in Sydney (Australia) who is infinately more talented in the MA's than i am, who told an attacker that if he got the knife off him he was going to ram it up his *rear end*. Anyway, Randy got the knife off this bloke and shoved all 5 inches of the blade into the guys left buttock. I know he got charged but i think he got off with a fine or something weird, something about he told the guy the consequences if he were to attack with the knife and he was in front of witnesses when he said it. Strange huh?
